Default KLA Install Thread(All Pictures)

I would like to start off and say this install went very smoothly. I am very impressed with the strength of the sub and amp combo. The box was good, except my sub was a little too deep. So I would recommend getting a standard 8" sub and not the one I got unless you want to mod the box. Anyways here the pics:

System:
Deck-Kenwood KIV-BT900
Speaker-Alpine Type S 4x6"
Sub-8" JBL Reduced depth sub(Name is Deceiving)
Amp-Infinity 300 watt mono amp

Wiring: Originally there were some wires up here. So I took those out and ran a new 8 gauge wire to the rear of the car. (not shown is the fuse and the hookup to the battery.)

Pics of box before mods:

Pics of sub mounted in box with mods: I just bought a spacer ring off ebay for $10 and that gave me the clearance I needed.

During the install:

Testfit:

Finished:

I love this because it looks completely stock. This sub hits hard. I was worried the Infinity Amp wouldn't be enough, but it is plenty. I have the sub turned down cause its so overpowering. Highly recommend this setup. If you have any quesitons let me know.

Have to agree, it looks like a really well made box and the proof is in the pudding, as a box can make or break a sub. Bottom end is essential in these cars, as the standard speaker sizing(4 x 6) means it's not going to come from them.

This sub hits harder than the 10" I used to have in my 924 with a false floor. The box is a great fit. You couldn't not make a better box yourself that fits in the cubby. I will say it take some mods like that spacer ring to get that sub that I bought to fit. The driver on the KLA site didn't seem to be that stout. I will say that its not really made for car audio. I would recommend looking at Kicker, JBL(needs mods), and any other high end sub. I got mine off Amazon for a good price. I think it was $60. Trust me it was worth the frustration to get that JBL to fit.

I know everyone will think I'm crazy, but I love the brown 944 interior.

The late 944s have a timeless look to them (especially the turbo cars). They look as good today as they did in the 80's....And the brown is just a reminder of what era these cars are from (And will still kick your Evo's *** )

Great install (Really though, wire the amp to the battery, and not the fuse panel)

I always loved how bass sounds in these cars. It's like a concert hall.

I can vouch for the quality of this box and the bass it makes possible. I have a JL Audio 8W3 V3 subwoofer installed in mine, powered by 300W, and the bass is more than adequate. The sub I used required no modification to the KLA box. For the small air volume of the 944, I think the 8" is just about perfect. Originally got it because I wanted a stealth install, but I've been quite impressed by the amount of bass this system can produce.

Make sure to periodically pull that sub box out and check for water. I bought the same box awhile back and bass kept getting worse, come to find out there was 8 inches of water in the cubby hole. Drain came off the "Y" near the gas overflow drain by the filler neck and just ran down into the cubby. Cubby backup hole was also plugged, sitting stagnant water present,........water ruined a great sound.

The underside of the KLA box is a Trapezoidal shape and so not only is it hard to make it will be hard to measure as well. If any one can give you the measuremnts they will also need to give you the angles etc which is not easy

I was in car audio for nearly 30 years and have made countless boxes and the shape scares me lol. I would rather make a custom fibreglass box moulded off the cubby than try and replicate that box, so good luck with making a copy. If you have the skills to make a box that shape then you don't really need measurements IMO. Have you seen the pics above of the shape ? The boxes are cheap and extremely complex to make, so why wouldn't you just buy one ? I know I'd buy one rather than make one and that's how I made my living for many years (here is the thread on the box I made for my car)

Also make sure to not screw into the gas tank. This seems like common sense, but when I bought my 951 the PO installed an amp and screwed through the metal to hold the amp in place. I filled the tank up one day and saw all of my premium gas spill out of my trunk.....Please think before you make holes! That gas tank is a b*tch to replace.

I used zipties to hole the amp in place. There are already holes to snake the ties through. This setup is still working great. It makes driving the car that much more enjoyable. It isn't too crazy loud, just sounds good. Great lows. I would recommend this to anyone. Well worth the added weight
