Backdate a 951?
Apologies for the silly question...but has anybody ever thought about "backdating" a 951 to look like a Carrera GT / GTS? At the very least, can one replace the front bumper of the 951 with a Carrera GT / GTS replica bumper?
I realize to really make it look like a Carrera GT you'd have to replace the rear fenders (and the interior, but I can overlook that). But I'm wondering if backdating body work would be easier than putting 951 "guts" into an older 924S.
Thoughts?

Well, considering how much of a pain it seems to replace the rear quarter panels on our cars, getting the 924 quarters on would be the biggest hurdle.
Don't get me wrong, I've had this exact same thought, because the CGT just looks so incredibly good.
I hope you do it! I'd love to see it.

if you wanted an awesome looking cgt clone with the more powerful powertrain of a 951 that would be the way to do it! im surprised i haven't daydreamed about that conversion before... go for it man, i wouldn't be far behind you if its not too difficult! i'd even sell the 968!

actually it wold be easy to do it, if you kept the rear fenders and interior. Since the 924 carrera had the 944 style front fenders.. all you mainly need is the carrera front bumper from gt-racing, vented header panel (someone sells a fiberglass copy for the 951), all the lights and a hood scoop.
If you wanted a simular rear flare get the flare kit from broadfoot racing for the 951 and keep the stock 944 quarters... Make it a new creation a 951 GTS
Gt-Racing:
924 Carrera Front Bumper: 500
Vented Panel: 300
Hood Scoop: 200

Honestly now you have me tempted to do this but in an updated 951 GTS version... with D9 Dual Projector lights
Also you can get the Carrera bumper on if it's fiberglass you'll just have to fill where the front fender corner meets the bumper. It would be very easy, and won't take hardly any time.

I ponder the idea of putting 951 drivetrain in my 924S daily. It would be a big job, and an 86 donar 951 would be the ticket(early offset), but there is a lot of little things. I studied this in depth at a shop I worked as we had a 86 951(M030) parts car and a couple of 924S laying around. Never materialized.
I think the key element is lightweight. You could get the look backdating a 951, but a light 924 would be breathtaking fast.
Fun thread none-the-less. I would love to see some of these projects if they exist.
A 951 Cup Car tribute would be fun also. Finding a sunroof delete 951 would be a challenge.

Can a sunroof panel be welded in place? ..although, to be honest I like the idea of having a couple of "luxuries" in my CGT look-a-like.
Oooh...guys...this is sounding interesting. Always wanted a CGT look-a-like, but wanted something with meat under the hood as well. Hmmmm.....

I say buy an '86 951.. strip the interior, throw back in some lightweight black perlon carpet and a body colored painted rear roll bar. I'd vote for finding a White car.. white is faster afterall. If not a true track car, some recaro Speed/srd seats style seats (non electric of course). Fab up some "RS" like door panels and pulls. Center console delete (radio); remove tape storage unit too; Remove sunroof motors and weld in roof panel. Some 951 8" fuchs up front and 911 9" fuchs rear. Modded suspension of course. AC Delete.
[ Essentially, spend $10-12K on a 3.5K 944 like all the others out here have ]

Need:
924 rear quarters
GTS rear flares
early N/A front fenders
931 vented nose panel
CGT scoop
GTS rear bumper
Complete paint job
8" 951 Fuchs up front
9" 911 Fuchs in the rear
Plus the cost of welding, fiberglass work, fairing, body prep, hardware and unforeseen difficulties.
Total cost: Somewhere between $6000 and $9000 plus the cost of the 951 (depending on the quality of the paint job, and whether or not the 951 you buy comes with Fuchs.)
Would be a cool project though.

you could cut most of the cost by leaving the rear alone. trading a turbo nose for a NA nose should gain you some cash for a nose panel.
they you need:
hood scoop
front bumper
paint
wheels

Here's a backdated '89 951 made in Finland several years ago.Made by my friend Jyrki for his wife's daily driver.
Builder of this 951 made also this replica of the Finnish rally ace's Henri Toivonen's 911. He is currently building very excotic 944 race car for Finnish Porsche Racing Club series.

Is there a difference between 944 n/a and 951 front fenders?
I think I would start there...at the front...get a new CGT bumper, headlights, eventually vented nose panel. Leave the rear alone until I decide to fully commit to the project. Then work out the interior, strip to minimal look...rear seat delete, Recaros, radio removal, etc. Sunroof? ..again, probably wait until the end when other welding is going on. So, in all likelyhood, I'd have a "partially backdated" 951 for some time. But I think I'd be ok with that.
Thanks for the pics Olli!
