Default Finally! I bought a 951...

Well it's been a long search but on Friday I arrived home in my new '89 Turbo after a 1500 mile drive through 8 states!

I don't have pics right now but will post them up when I do.

The drive was perfect...about 650 miles the first day and 850 the second day with no problems whatsoever (other than not being able to open the taps due to traffic ). No CD player and I wasn't even slightly bored.

Many thanks to you rennlisters but especially JohnKoaWood and Shawn (?) without who I would definitely not have been so successful. John, sorry I couldn't stop by VA...I wasn't sure how long the drive home was going to take.

Congrats. Can't wait to see pictures. Let us know what mods, if any are done to the car.

I did the same with mine 3 years ago...I live in Austin, TX...bought it from a guy in the D.C area. Luckily, I have some family in Memphis so I was able to break the trip up and hang out there for a couple days. I drove about 1500 miles on my way back...and I had a CD player...but I don't think I even turned on the radio...enjoyed every second of the drive (except in Arkansas where the interstate has so many potholes it ended up costing me $500 to get the dings out of my FM5's when I got home).

Enjoy it - post pics!!

Actually the car is completely 100% stock, no mods whatsoever. I'm debating with myself whether I should mod it at all. It doesn't need more peak horsepower but it could use a bit more torque at lower revs. I will have to do some research...

Divil, glad to see you found one! I know you were looking for the perfect 951 so it's going to be great to see the pictures and hear the details.

Mileage? Maintenance? History? Condition?

chip it and you'll change your mind in a hurry. another 4lbs of boost turns the car into a monster.

The car has about 166K miles on it now...but that's the worst thing about about it - pretty much everything else is good news. It's in very good shape, perfect paint (it's a repaint job but you can't really tell).

The problems are minor:
-hatch struts are shot and don't hold the hatch open
-central locking doesn't work
-for some reason, although the turbo seems to boost fine, the gauge only works properly in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. In first, the gauge never moves and in second it moves up a little then drops down again. But it feels like it's boosting, it certainly has enough power in 2nd gear to scare the **** out of me

To me it feels very different to any modern car I've driven and that caught me by surprise (yes I know I am crazy I travelled all that way without having driven a 944 before!). The steering is much heavier than my Audi A6 and you feel the road a lot more. It's also more a little more sluggish off the line until the turbo kicks in. But I'll get used to all that. It's a little rough at very low revs...I will take a look at the throttle butterfly valve to see if it needs cleaning, as I've found that this fixes this problem with other cars.

Overall though, it drives very well and it seems to just come alive once you get up to highway speeds. It likes to go fast!
