Go to ebay and search 944 short shifter. I cannot post a link or it will be removed since they are not forum sponsors. The shifter looks a lot like the Lindsey version.

I'm want to go the second route, but I'd have to wait a few months until I have access to a good machine shop again.
I did mine in the car with no problems and use the 924 bushings.

Any tips or is it as straightforward as I think it is: unclip from the shifter, unbolt the rod at the trans, and then turn it on it's side and drill straight down?

Not that I know of, but many people here have hacked their stock rods to make a shorter version that still accepts the stock ****. I think there are a few threads out there, I'll edit after looking for them

Yes. Go to the link in post #3. The short shifter vendor I used also has a version that uses the stock shift ****.

I had to use a small round file to take a small amount out of the center to make it smoother.

I just wedged the shift rod back and drilled it in the car. I covered up as much area as I could to keep shavings from going everywhere. I wished I had an extra set of hands to hold it while I drilled. It can be wedged tho so you can do it by yourself with the 1/2 drill bit. You have to make sure you don't drill at an angle.
