Default Retractable rear seat belt mechanism

Hi all,

I want to fit seat belts to my 1956 356A Porsche coupe - the retractable bit needs to be mounted on the side wall of the 356. But the only retractors I've been able to find here in Oz lock when in that side-mounted position so will not work.

But last week I bought a 1989 944 and it looks to me as if the rear seat belt mechanism on the 944 just may be side mounted (I can't be sure without pulling things apart, and I'm overseas at present so can't investigate further).

But can anyone confirm for me that the 944 rear seat belt retractable mechanism is designed to be side mounted? If so I'll try the usual dismantlers to get them so I can fit seat belts into my 356.

Thanks all,

Not sure if this answers your question but the 944 rear belt roller mounts vertically to the side with one bolt and a fixed pin. It goes right under the silver rub bracket in the pic.

Which belt are you talking about. The early 944s had a retractable lap belt that you could use. It does not need to be in any specific position to work.

Hi KuHL951 (Steve), thanks for the picture, but that is (I think) for the seat belt for the front seat occupants. I was meaning the seat belt for the rear seat occupants - the retractor is on the side of the rear hatch area I think. Would you have a shot of that belt retractor location, or know if that retractor is against the sidewall with the belt pulling pretty well directly forward? If so its just what I need.

Sorry about the confusion.

The rear 3 point belts are A difficult to get, and B dont mount horizontal... they are about 45 degrees off horizontal...

I can snap a pic if needed, but it is raining right now... however she will be in the garage tomorrow night..

My bad...lost in translation. As John has noted I think maybe you were referring to the 3-point rear seat belt system? The 83-87+ had the roller attached directly to the seat area in the seat well, not the wall, and was strictly a lap belt. It wasn't sensitive to position like the sidewall mounted 3-point belt or front belt.

I only have 1 retractor mounted, but can take pictures of both brackets, and the mounted retractor!
