i don't carry a jack anymore, so i'm already screwed. but if you're driving long distances, a spare is probably a good idea.

I drove for 15 years with no spare. The car was lowered, and had larger brakes, so it was useless. I never had an issue, and I took the car on 1500mile long weekend trips every year. Its all about assessing the risk. Knowing I didn't carry a spare, I was more careful on bumpy back roads, kept my distance from cars in front of me so I could see potholes or road debris with enough time to react.

Before removing the spare tire, ask yourself this:
How big are yours?(kahonies) and can you sleep well at night and not worry about it?

I don't carry a spare or a jack, just a can off tire sealer/inflator. Check out these guys.
