Opinions: spare tire usability
#16
I would not want to be with out a spare (my Toyota Sienna AWD has no spare (came with run flat tires BS) but this is a work van and is never more than 30 miles from home and I have an extra tire/rim at my home and could have some one bring it to me. I carry the can of air sealer, compressor, rope plugs (this has saved me more than once on many vehicles) so "do you feel lucky, well do you?" is what you have to ask your self, I carry my spare all the time in my 85.5 944 na (never checked if it holds air but will this spring) and remove it for Auto Cross & DE.

Mine is actually laying in my hatch fully inflated....
I needed to use it several months ago, but had no Air Pump... Brother to the Rescue!!! -Thanks Bro
Anyway I was certainly glad to have it! And now it takes up so much space..., However I know that I'll take it out, and later that week I will need it... Ha ha!
I have been meaning to buy an air pump so I can at least deflate it...
P.S. Aluminum Scissor Jack: My bent all up and pretty much clasped on itself when I tried to use it??? And the Handle also Bent all Up!!! Anyone Else??? -I now carry a small regular hydraulic jack
(would love to remove all this weight though....)

what else have you removed? if thats all, you should reweigh, no way its that light.

Even your starting weight sounds light. That's more the weight of a track prepped car.

I lightened my car up quite a bit with the rear seat delete , and took that 40 # damper out of the r rear wheel well ( I have a cab ) but not carry a spare?! cmon ! I carry a full size spare , and a decent tool kit . what can I say I was a boy scout be prepared .
ok your driving home late at night , its pouring rain , you hit an unseen pot hole...blow out . now your out there dinking around in the dark with that stupid little compresser trying to fill a spare that once you get on you can only safely drive 55 mph ! trucks wizzing by while it takes you twice as long to fix a flat as it should . SAFETY FIRST carry a spare and a reflective vest.

You never need it.. till you need it.
imho, on a street car why would you not have it? now, if you are building a racecar, fine, remove it. If you are tracking/ax then fine, remove at the event.
While a normal driver might notice a 100# weight saving, I don't know many that would notice, in a regular street use environment, a 30# savings.. Its a placebo effect more than a noticeable one.

Dunno, but the 951 spares are made of aluminum. Highly desirable to the outlaw 356 guys.
Excellence did a story a couple of issues back about the inflatable spacesaver spares. Apparently replacement tires have not been produced since the late 1990s. The basic question throughout the article was whether or not the spares were safe to use. The author never really answered the question, however he did present some persuasive evidence that our spares will continue to be usable for a while to come. Bottom line, UV rays cause a breakdown of rubber over time. This is one of the reasons tires begin to crack and become unsafe. Because our spares live their lives under the carpet, generally free of exposure to UV rays and significant moisture, they will last for significantly longer than an average tire.
With the above information in mind, I've had a spare save me once when all other options had failed. Because of that, I won't even consider taking the spare out of either of our P-cars.
