700 miles in 2 days (review)
I would like to start off that cruise makes a trip this long easy to do. I currently live in Kansas City, MO and had to drive to St. Louis, MO then back pretty much in less than 48 hours.
Car in question is a great 1986 944 Turbo. Car did great, way better than I thought this trip would be. The car was comfortable planted, and smooth. I could tell the suspension is showing its age, but overall seemed to ride nice. Now onto the cruise part, this single feature made the trip much more enjoyable. It worked flawlessly and helped me to manage a solid 27 MPG while doing an average of 75 MPH. I was shocked. The car got great mileage and road great. I guess you could say its not as smooth as say my Grand Cherokee, but still rolls nicely down the highway. 0 problems on the trip and it did nothing but put a smile on my face.
Thats my review. So if you are looking for a great all around car. The turbo is it. Wuuuuummmmm psssshhhh!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear you had a mechanically sound trip! I got you beat though....
I took my 944 on a 732 Mile Trip in One Day!
Also very smooth, no problems, a complete joy to drive; Went from DC to Covington VA, then thru the West Virginia Mountains and up thru PA eventually arriving in Rochester NY! Zooooom
My odometer stopped working months ago,,, so i'm not really sure what my mileage was; but i got 31+ mpg on a trip about two years ago.
Great Cars!! Driving them makes them (and us) Happy!

MEH, I did over 1000 miles this past weekend, have done more than 3000 miles since reassembling my engine 3 weeks ago..
Has been running like a top since the alternator failed 3 days after the engine was put back together...
Friday saw me in Stafford VA, then Newport News, followed by Richmond and back to Stafford, Saturday I was running all over creation in Upper Marlboro MD, then back to Stafford.. Sunday was Stafford to VA Beach, then Richmond and back to Stafford...
Fun weekend...
Many are scared to drive more than a few miles... I have driven this car to Detroit, and Charleston SC... I love my 944s, they are my relaxation...

Agreed!!! I commuted from Baltimore to DC everyday last year (80-100miles a day) and drive home to Rochester NY every few months!! As reliable as any other car i've ever had.

944's really are great for road trips. I drive to SF twice a year, and have driven everything from BMW e34/e39 5's, to GMC 2500 quad cab Sierras. The 944 left me with the most energy at the end of the drive.

The longest trip I've done in my 87NA was roughly 1,100 mile in 22 hrs just stopping for gas after I bought it' return trip from florida to SW MI. It ran wonderfully all the way including close on 125mph going thorugh the mountains I got lost for a moment in the fun of luckily no cops close

A few years ago, I drove approx. 1650 miles in 22 hours, Winnipeg to Vancouver. The drive through the Rockies was absolutely awesome, the gas mileage not so much... The 944 is one heck of a highway car and handles like a champ. Of course I drove a lot slower on the way home... The car never gave me any problems. I guess that's why I maintain it so rigorously...

Drove from Austin TX to Mineral Wells TX and back in one day (~400mi). Went up with no starter, got to Mineral Wells and suffered a large electrical fire that melted the main bundle completely. Hot-wired the headlights, and DME computer directly to the battery with borrowed wire from a rancher, push started the car and drove the 200 miles back in the dark with nothing but headlights working!!! (Mind you this entire drive you won't see a town with a population over 500! lol i/e middle of bumf*ck nowhere)
So- in one sense you could argue that the 944 did something less than reliable, but on the other hand, it still faithfully and flawlessly made the perilous trip home after some mcguyvering.
