Default 968 buying guide

Hi everyone.
Next saturday I'm gonna take a look at an '92 968 cabrio with only 70.000km.
I'm wondering what to look for when buying such a 968.
I already checked the milage (km) and it's correct.

I now own a 911 ('85 3.2) and an 928 ('90 S4) so I'm not completely new to the Porsche scene.

Does the 968 have any problemspots I can check saturday.
Any advise would be nice! I'll check this forum tonight for answers too.

Post in the 968 specific forum, and do a search, you will find mounds of information. The biggest items are when the belts were done, and if the cam chain and vario-cam pads were changed.

And don't be surprised if some member named "Odoreater" chimes in about how the 4 cyl engine is crap and needs to be replaced with a V8. He's harmless if you just ignore him and go about your business.

exactly....

and also, the cabs are very close to being the best used P-car value out there. we've seen very nice examples selling in the $8~9 k range. the cars are very solid. expect leaking ps steering fluid every 25~40 k miles after replacing rack, pump and all lines. this is not an isolated problem. it's ALL the cars. the result is that you'll have to replace swaybar bushings and caster blocks more often. other than that, most of the cars are well cared for in the afterworld.... hard to kill, not that many lemons out there. there's quite a few engines around (they often outlive the cars) so, not impossible to pick one up, preserve it and go about your business enjoying about as worry-free P-car driving as you can get.

Strange there's a guy posting rubbish in this 4 cylinder forum, never had this problem in the 911 and 928 forum on rennlist....

Hi Paul, As mentioned about the 968 Forum.com, join it. Go to the Reading Room and click on 968 Library. Scroll down to Cabriolet Top Repair Manual, read it and you will find all you need to check out the Cabs Top Problems and fixes. There is a lot of good reading found in the Library.

Hi.
Just got some more info about my buying candidate.
The reason for the low milage is the car has had damage left front. It stood almost 10 year in a barn awaiting repair. The first owner probably didn't care much.... Then a chief mechanic from a Porsche centre bought the car and fixed it.
I'm not sure how bad the damage has been but I'll take a critical look at the repairjob done (now some 6 years ago). I'll try to locate this mechanic tomorrow.

What do you think about this story? I personally don't think much about damage if it is proparly fixed that is.

Price is 5k below streetprice in Holland and Germany (about 1/3 discount). From pictures the car looks immaculate.
