Default How do I take the steering wheel off on early 944?

I have an 83 944 and I want to install a steering wheel from an 86. How do I take the 3 spoke horn pad off the steering wheel? I tried pulling on it but I don't want to damage it.

On my 87 NA the horn pad pulls off, it requires considerable force.

Center pad just pulls off. 3 mounting clips hold it on, one at each spoke end. Remove the horn wire(spade connector). Take off the nut (22mm?) and pull the wheel off. It can take a good amount of force the first time. The mounting clips are plastic, and like any 25 year old plastic it can break, but FWIW I've pulled mine several times w/o incident.

use both hands spread your fingers over as much of the pad as you can and pullllllll it will pop off loudly and scare you the first time.

nut behind it is 24mm or 15/16", you will need an extension and will need to hold the steering wheel still while you loosen it. i can just hold the wheel with my hand but you may want to find a friend

You may also want to leave the nut threaded on a couple of turns while you pull the wheel off the splines. I have heard of many people bonking their noses, etc when the thing flies off. This has never happened to me, of course - because I always leave the nut threaded on slightly...

When I removedd the wheel from my '83 944 it almost fell off when I remove the horn and nut. But you may have to barrow a steering wheel puller from Autozone, I had to to remove the wheel from the '86 Fiero GT. It does make the job MUCH easier.

I have an '86 951 and I'd like to swap an '87 steering wheel into it, pretty much the same process?
