Post OT: Great spray paint?

If there's one thing I don't know nearly enough about, it's the Mesozoic Era... oh, and spray paints

I've been a fat-dumb-happy Rust-Oleum user for many years. I'm generally satisfied with the results, but can't help but wonder if I'm locked in a box. I've been using a bit of Plastikote spray paints lately and find that the finished coat is durable, but the application is a real pain. It does not cover or stick as well as "trusty-rusty". Is there another brand out there I've been dismissing?

Any suggestions for a great paint that goes on easy, is durable, and covers well in two coats? If this is Rust-Oleum, then I'll continue on.

My specific area of concern right now is the interior of my stripped race car project. It's gonna be flat/satin black.

Oh, and cost is not an issue... I'm loaded! [burp]

Can't help you on the type but why black? Do you want to bake on purpose? I know it doesn't get that hot in the great Northwest but wouldn't want to be in there.

I would go with a light or dull grey if white is out of the question.

My computer had this to say:

[quote]Master, I'm sorry, but the words "hot" and "Northwest" in the same sentence do not compute. I feel user "Schneider" is trying to trick you. Have a nice day, Master

Seriously... I hadn't really considered any other colors, but that does make sense. The exterior is Guards Red, the interior is Black and Tan (mmmm, yummy ). The inside of a gutted car is a pretty hideous sight. I am simply trying to find a color that will draw the least attention to it. I had considered that flecked gray, but it seems to be flaky because of coat thickness. I don't want anything heavy, but I will consider using a lighter-than-black color. Thanks!

Another idea...
I used "toolbox" paint for my race wheels. Looks pretty cool. I found it at Home Depot. It looks like the paint craftsman uses on their grey toolboxes. It's grey with black "flkes" in it. I think that might look pretty 'Bithcin'.

Yeah, I was in Seattle a couple of years ago for a couple of weeks. I was told I got lucky and received the 4-days per year of sunshine during my visit!

Just did the same thing to the back of my car. Lightly sanded it down with 400-grit wet-n-dry sandpaper and sprayed on two layers of flat-black Rustoleum. The stuff works well and has better color coverage than some of that private-brand paint you find at OSH/Builders/HomeDepot.

I went with flat-black because of the reflections. I would get a superimposed heads-up-display type of reflection of my spare tire, fuel-level sender, whatever I had in the back in my rearview mirror. That was really annoying, and the flat-black kept those reflections down to a minimum.

Skip, for unrusted areas where abrasion isn't a concern, consider Krylon. Not as thick & heavy as the Rustoleum I've used, but dries quicker and is durable except for wear areas.

I did the phone dials on my '88 with Krylon (gray primer &, IIRC, Aluminum, two coats), and it lasted a _lot_ better than the factory paint had... factory paint was peeling & scabby in '94 when I did it; the Krylon respray looked fine almost six years later when I sold the car.

I think Krylon is usually about a dollar a can cheaper than Rustoleum, but I haven't compared prices lately.

Jim, lemme guess.. you're gonna become a tagger....

Skip: As a fellow rain soaked NW resident, I would have to recommend Hammerite (got it at McLendons Hardware). I welded in some patches in my oldest Volvo about 10 years ago behind the rear wheels in the trunk area... the car was from Ohio. http://www.masterchem.com/index_hammerite.html
I used a high gloss inside the trunk... no rust or chips. In general worked better than Rust-Oleum. --Roy--

Another vote for krylon. I've used a couple of different brands to respray my kart frame and my favorite is krylon. You get a good pattern out of the nozzle and it lays down with a nice thickness. I've even painted the front quarter of a friends 914 with it and it came out very nicely.

I also second the opinion of not using black on the inside of a race car. It can get quite hot inside a race car after a few laps. How about a nice grey to match the pacwest sky? I recently finished a 911 vintage racecar in a primer grey colored catalytic hardening paint that should be very durable and it looked nice. We did the roll cage in a black spray paint so we could touch up scratches easily.

Anybody have web space avaiable so everyone can see the pictures?

Thanks, all!

Chris: you can upload photos directly to Rennlist here:

Or, we seem to have quite a bit of webspace available at the Tech-Session site

Skip, Rustoleum is excellent - for spray paint. I've had very good luck with Krylon also and agree that it is a little thinner in application, but not negatively so.

I suggest you go with a flecked light finish gray, This usedto be calld "Zolatone". I even think you can get a three color version thati ncludes red, white and gray. Would look good on your car if the outside is Guards Red. Always consider using clear coat after to drammatically improve the gloss level and overall appearance. I know, I know it's race car, but it can still look good! "**** Race Car Owner/Driver" is not such a bad thing.

EDIT - Jim968, Did you use clear coat after putting on the Aluminum Krylon? Was the final color slightly lighter or darker than factory colored Phonedials?

You guys are tops! The purchase is tonight with the application starting Sunday, and I think you've all talked me out of the black. I'm going for FLUORESCENT PINK!!!

Chris; That is a thing of beauty! Nice
