Default Dropped Speed sensor bolt - Crankshaft won't turn

I searched through the forum and did not see any ideas that might help in this situation. I tried moving the crank by hand, both left and right and it will not budge in either direction.

I am calling for ideas prior to resolving myself to dropping the drivetrain.

Thanks,
Lee

That's the only way from what I have read... pull the motor or the drivetrain....

Pull the starter and have a look around the fly wheel with a inspection mirror.
Good luck

I have already taken off the starter to look around...no luck there. Also have tried to wiggle the crank back and forth in hope of dislodging said obstruction, and did not hear any clinks/clunks/pings, etc indicating something has moved/fallen to the next level.

While it does sound like you've dropped something in the bell housing, tell us more about why you were messing with the sensors? Could you have tightened the other sensor down too much and it's pushing against the ring gear?

Unfortunately, a little bolt like that could have gotten wedged between the flywheel and the back of the block... Can you beg, borrow or steal a bore scope?

I was messing with the sensors because I was getting an intermittent cut off and sometimes a high idle. I had previously replaced the TPS. Car has approx 180,000 miles on the original sensors. When I first discovered the stuck crank, I pulled up the sensors to be sure they were not stoping the crank. No change. I don't know anyone locally with a borascope.

Just to clarify, you are using a 24mm socket on the front of the crank with a ratchet or breaker bar.. not literally your hands right?

Jon, I had to giggle when you asked that! Then I re-read the OP. He may actually be trying to turn the crank with his fingers....in which case, if he succeeds, he is officially a man I would mess with! :-)
In the event you are using a breaker bar, make sure in rocking the bolt, you don't accidentally loosen it. We'll know, though, by a new oil pressure post....

Try running a flexible magnet down the sensor hole, maybe you'll get lucky and retrieve it. Might be worth a try.

I saw a guy use a high pressure water hose to get one out once.

Has anybody tried a skinny "lipstick" camera that plugs into a PC computer, or a small webcam?

After all, those things have a tiny lens, and an LED light could be attached, snaked down that hole.

I had a similar situation when I stupidly neglected to stuff a rag into the open hole of the timing chain cover on my Bimmer. Messed around for hours with a duct-taped magnet on a stick, no joy. Magnet kept sticking to everything else, such as block, chain, etc.. Had I been able to see what I was doing, it would have been a 30 second operation.

This is essentially a laparoscope or endocscope as used by protcologists.

You guys are too funny..yes on the 24mm w/breaker bar (I wish I was strong enough to turn my engine with just my hands on the pulley), yes on snaking a strong magnet on a wire from the top and bottom. No on getting a bolt pulled or falling out. Thanks for the ideas.
