He gave me an offer $7,700 and it is mine. I e-mailed with a $7,500 offer and told me that if it doesn’t sell by this week that he will sell it to me. Then I e-mailed him asking to come down the $200 now, 5/12 Monday, and I would buy it.

I also NEED to know, how much a timing belt is to get changed?? How much it would cost to fix a rip in the drivers seat, right on the side where most 944s get one, it's about 4-6 inches long. Thanks

Get it recovered localy, or there are a couple places that do it for much much less than that....

You can get complete reupholstery for the front seats from Travis at Rennbay.com for around $200 or $300 bucks. If you're mechanically inclined you can do the belts and waterpump yourself for around $450. Most shops will charge around a thousand.
If the deal falls through give a look at the 968 I posted about that's on Ebay right now. 1992 blk/blk at $7100 and has met it's reserve. It looks pretty nice.

Does the seller know the history? Known mechanical histories for these cars are worth $$. If the seller doesn't have documentation, $7900 might be a bit high. What does everyone else think?

Instead of the rip in the seat, I would worry about getting a PPI from a Porsche specialist before you drop any cash on this car. Especially since you're buying from a dealer. Do they have the maintenance history on the car? Any receipts for work done?

Ok, this is going to sound REALLY dumb, what does PPI stand for?? He doesn't know when the last timing belt was changed at all, should I be worried or just replace as soon as I get it?? Thanks.

PPI - Pre-Purchase Inspection. Many times worth its weight in gold.

How much does that cost?? Where would I go for that?? The car is about 100 miles away from me so how would I set it up?? Also, what do they check over?? A big thing like I said is how much does it cost, I don't want to pay a ton of money to find out if it is good, but it would be well worth it if I found out the car is not a winner. Let me know.

Mike,

I think that most PPI's are in the sub-$200 range (like $125-$150) but in some areas they might cost you up to $300. All is based on supply and demand of an appropriate Porsche mechanic in the area, and it is important that the PPI be done by a Porsche mechanic. When you think about it this can be real cheap insurance. If the motor mounts are gone, that can be a $250 job right there. Losing the waterpump - Look at $1400 - $1500 when you include the cost of the pump, thermostat, seals, labor and (most likely) belts.

Another good indicator of a vehicle with potentially major problems: If the seller doesn't want to allow you to get the PPI. Many say that this is a good indicator to walk away from the "deal", quickly. This would include the old line "we had the inspection done already". You are looking for an independent assessment, not one done by a friend of the seller's down the street, or in their own mechanic's bay.

Regarding a good mechanic local to the car, post the city where it is located, and ask if any local rennlisters can provide recommendations. Otherwise do a yellow pages search on Yahoo for the city, and see if any Porsche specialists show up.

One last thought. Look at the 924/944/968 FAQ section of this website. Look up the Frequently Asked Questions section and go to Section 5 (first time buyers). Has a lot of good info, if you haven't already read it. If you feel you really have to go through with the purchase and can't get a professional PPI, then at least this information will arm you to do a better basic assessment of the car on your own.

May be a little bit late in the negotiations since he's already come down, but with cars like these, you can use the lack of service records as a bargaining tool (I've done that). Things like a cracked dash or a seat rip are expected and obvious, it s the things that are unexpected that get you stranded on the highway or hit the wallet. At only 8K miles per year, I've seen a lot worse. Good luck with your decision.

PPI is a necessity. expecially if you cant physically inspect the car.
Dash cracks are normal. Belts upon receipt is mandatory - if you have no service records. Expect a grand on receipt for belts, and other misc to make it road worthy.. and dont kill any kittens!!!

He doesn't have the records from when the timing belt was changed last so I am going to do it as soon as I get it. How hard is it?? What do you have to do to change it?? How much is it going to cost, say if I did it compared to a shop?? Where is a good place to get the parts I need? Do I need any special tools? How long would it take??
