Default Is there any difference?

I have the chance to buy a low mileage early 944 engine to put in my late model 944, is there any difference at all between the two? Thanks in advance.

Price is four hundred, from the pics it looks to be all updated, water pump etc. My engine still runs strong but i have some goodies to add to the new one so i thought i wood buy this one and add the new toys and do the clutch and swap them out.

the camshaft has a few degrees difference but it is not something you would ever notice. otherwise they are entirely interchangeable.

you might get lucky with the 83 motor, some of them left the factory with forged connecting rods rather than cast like most 944s

forget that pee-shooter piece of crap....

buy my engine. 250 hp. seriously, in your car it would be a monster and you can have it for a good price. if you're willing to go about 1.5 k higher you can have Gary's 3.0 (Millville). but, both engines are solid. i live right in Dover, Mass, and i can offer you a solid warranty.

a 968 engine for 4 grand is a better deal than an old 944 engine for free. you'll spend less $$$ in the long haul becuase the '68 engine can go for 2 or 3 hundred thousand miles, EASY if it is well-cared for. 944 DME's (electrical systems) are a disaster in new england with our **** weather.

and this is the minimum amount of power that your car desperately needs.

Thanks v2, about this cam difference, i will be installing an after market cam, will that affect anything. And as far as the connecting rods i bought a set of forged rods so im good either way on that.

The oil pump is slightly different in diameter. The later cars have the ISV. Use the late DME and AFM on the early engine.

first off, a $4k 968 motor would put you $4k in the hole more than a free 944 motor... a complete 944 motor can be bought for $500 in good running shape...you could buy 2 reman'd 944 engines for $4k.

secondly, a 944 engine is capable of doing 2 or 300 thousand miles if properly cared for as well, and in that interval will be cheaper to maintain because there is less to go wrong (less parts in a 944 motor than a 968 motor)

and the 968 electrical system is subject to the same weather as a late 944 electrical system so that is a moot point. but regardless of car, if the weather is affecting your electricals then you have other problems.
