Default bent wheels.. to fix or not

I just picked up a set of the replica cup2s, early offset. They look fine visually, but when I checked the runout 3 of the wheels have a spot where they are slightly bent on the inside edge... about 1/16" - 1/8" out of round. They seemed to be holding air, so I'm just wondering if I should spend the money to have these straightened or just leave them and hope they balance out?

The general rule I've always heard is if the center section is damaged in any way, they are trash. If it is just the drum, then they are usually fixable. Take them to a repair shop and get their opinion! I'm sure they are salvageable, but damn Cup II reps are heavy!

I had a PD that had pretty bad damage to the outer flange from an accident. It balanced fine, but was like driving on Flintstones wheels above ~45. Balanced doesn't equal round.

If the bead seat is still round, the outer flange can be "wavy" as long as it still holds air. Typical curb rash doesn't affect the bead seat, hitting deep potholes or a curb at speed does. The circled area of the flange got folded in, pushing the bead seat inwards.

In general, I think replicas are *never* worth repairing... That's just my 2 cents.

I agree, I think they'll balance fine and you'll never notice.

Thanks for the replies... one question though. How can the wheel balance fine but still have vibration over 45 mph? I would think that means that it wasn't actually balanced properly.

A wheel can be balanced and out of round at the same time. Find a tire shop that can Road Force Balance for best results… Link.

My Porsche dealer has a new RF balancer = perfect ride!

I work at a dealership and the road force measurement is great. Measure bare rim for excessive radial or lateral runout, if those measurements are okay, mount the tire and make sure that you do not have to apply no more than 4 oz. on one side of the wheel. Road Force should not exceed 19 lbs. per 1 revolution for a passenger car.

I have a pair of phone dials bent the same way yours are described. Local Firestone dealer tried 2x to balance out on a high end road force balance machine, and they still shook like crazy between 45-65. I was able to score a replacement pair for less than having the bent ones repaired locally. Bottom line - balanced and not round will equal vibration. Get them repaired or trash them and find good wheels.

Would make great beaters for a weekend track car.
If you want to sell them I would be interested.
