Post Factory Alarm

Does anybody still use the factory alarm? I had to remove my seat to adjust the parking brake and found the key for the alarm under the seat. I didn't try the alarm because I am afraid that there could be problems.

Has anybody had problems with the factory alarm? Should I use it or just ignore it. It would be nice to have.

Thanks.

I use it on both a '90 S2 and a '91 951. In the later cars it's activated directly through the door handle locks, and the lock pins have blinking red leds to let you know the car is armed.

When they go bad, you basically can't start the car, armed or not, so yours should be OK. This happened to me recently in the S2 and required replacing the alarm control module, behind the DME under the passenger side floor panel.

i use mine occasionally. I've never had any problems. I set it off a couple of times (on purpose) to see if it worked, and it was fine.

Thank you one and all.

I'll give it a try this weekend so that if I have any problems I will have the time to fix it.

I use mine, and personally haven't had any trouble, however, there was a woman with an s2 at the local pca that had a relay go bad with it.... that was annoying... went off every time she shut the car off...

I didn't realise mine worked until i set it off accidently, about 6 months after getting the car. However, I didn't know that the key to turn it off was under the seat! What key do you use to enable it? I only have the ignition key!

Again, in the late cars the alarm is activated directly through the door handle locks with the ignition key.

The earlier cars (pre '88, I think) have a separate key for a lock cylinder in the quarter panel that activates the alarm.

The key to my alarm was lost by the PO. I spoke to the local dealer who said that you cannot get another key cut. Instead, you have to buy a new lock and key at a cost of $80. I then spoke to a couple of locksmiths, who said the same thing as the dealer. However, one locksmith said he would try to cut a key for $50, successful or not. I have ordered a new lock and key.
