It's just like when I removed the 4.3 Vorteck from my 4-door S-10 and put in a FI-350, I got better gas mileage. With the V8 in the 944 you can literally take off in first and go to second without pressing the gas pedal. I'm not sure about the Turbo trans gearing in first. The overall 5th NA ratio is close to the overall 5th gear ratio in the 951 box, that's why V8 swappers want a NA 5th in their 951 box...
0.6 would be the sweet spot in a Turbo box for sure. I've run acetone in my carbeurated bikes for years to keep the carbs clean and I get about 8% increase in MPG's in my carbed bikes because of the better fuel atomization and extra Oxygen content, plus it is a fuel in itself.

as per that Iris blue 968 i like so much.

car: $20 k (buyer would likely sell at that price).
LS2 crate motor w/ intake upgrade: $10.5 k
Turbo S replica 6-speed transmission good for ~195 mph @ 6,000 rpm: $6.5 k.
instal engine, add ps, brakes, ac: $10 k.
new seats, rear seat delete, a few more int. upgrades and stereo: $10 k.
wheels, tires, brakes, suspension upgrades. $8 k.

sell 3.0 engine, transmission with 135 k miles: $3.5 K (maybe).

total: about $61~63 K.

LS3 376/480HP crate motor $7k
944 Turbo S transmission with NA 5th gear, good for ~199 mph @ 6,500 rpm: $1.5k
install engine, brakes, ac: $9 k.
new seats (reupholstered, $700, but on a car costing $20k they should be mint)
rear seat delete (free, maybe $10 worth of carpet)
a few more int. upgrades (??)
stereo: $1 k for the most high-end setup you could use in a 944 and actually appreciate the features of
wheels, tires, suspension upgrades. $8 k.

sell 3.0 engine, transmission with 135 k miles: $4.5 K (maybe).

total: about $43 K.
i just saved you $20k...if you did the install yourself (-$6000, big reds cost about $3000 to buy still) and stuck with some standard wheels (-$3000), your cost would be $34000, subtracting the car...$14000...it is not taken into account the special conversion parts that must be bought rather than made, but that total still is not much.

I don't know what mpg I get on mine, but I know it's not good! S2 trans ftl as far as good mpg goes.

I didn't have to do brakes/suspension/renewal on my swap, but I did do an external t-stat controlled oil cooler, oil filter relocate, PS cooler, lightweight flywheel/clutch, trans strengthening plate, etc, etc.

I recouped $7000 by selling the 951 go fast parts though...
