I’d almost recommend removing the small springs. They wedged themselves between the clutch disc and pressure plate not allowing me to select 1st or reverse gears without a lot of force and grinding. That disc could have easily gone another 40 to 50k, though honestly the release bearing and torque tube bearings were quite bad and I don’t think they would have made that distance.

So is that a turbo disc? I don't remember all the extra springs on the Sachs spring center clutch for the NA's.

Yes, this was pulled from my 951 with about 76k showing.

951Saga,
That looks like the one that I have, and it's being used on a 944 NA. Should it still work? On removing the little springs, should a just break them out of there, or would they be all right with the NA flywheel. For some reason I'm under the impression that an NA flywheel is different from a turbo flywheel, is that correct? I'm at least glad to see that someone else has a clutch disk that at least looks similar to the one that I have. Unfortunately that still doesn't look like 944Ross's.

Mine is wrong, no question. You can't even get it on the TT shaft.

I'd be leery of taking the small springs out of the turbo style; look at the other side of the splined hub. With no springs, the splined section can turn a few degrees, like the Limp Home lugs on a rubber clutch.

G'hopper, Rock Auto emailed me back and asked me to confirm my car is a Turbo, when I obviously selected this piece because it is non-turbo. I'm suspecting their system has a mistake in it. If you read thru the Why Does a 944 Clutch Cost So Much thread, I'm pretty sure Turbo clutches are different than NA. I will check there later.

Check these pics… I’d say it is the same turbo disc, (same number). I can’t speak on the N/A discs. You could offer that disc for $100 and some one would get a great deal.

I cut out the remaining small springs and confirmed there is a small degree of movement to soften initial clutch engagement. I’d think welding some small steal rods in place of the springs would make this a usable disc again.

Any slop will put an impact load on the tranny gears, I'd weld it for sure. You'd still have the big springs (which BTW are double springs, I'm 99% sure the NA Sachs disc is single springs). From the efforts they went to with the springs, you can tell they were worried about the tranny.

Grasshopper, here is an excerpt from the Why ... thread:

(FRPorscheman)
"I actually don't have an NA flywheel to test with. I have a turbo and and S2 flywheel. I was assuming that an NA flywheel would be just like a 951 flywheel (except for the difference in diameter). I thought the center section and the hub offset would be the same as with a 951 flywheel. And since the starion and ranger discs fit on the 951 flywheel (with bolts) I assumed it would work. Well, it turns out that the NA flywheel is actually not like the 951 flywheel at all. The offset of the hub is a lot less (closer to the friction surface), actually like the S2. That's why the S2 and NA discs are the same p/n. Well I confirmed that no disc out there will work on the S2 so they won't work for the NA either.

I apologize for getting all your hopes up. I shouldn't have made an assumption. But still, for the NA owner, 2 solutions were found in this thread. One was the relined discs from Vertex, and the second was finding a clutch shop near you that will reline your old clutch. The Vertex discs will be under $200 and a clutch shop should charge you under $100 to reline and respring your old one. Either way you're saving money and sticking with Sachs, so I suppose it's better than a mitsubishi disc anyway..."
