Post It was the best of times, it was the worst of times

I finally got my engine running last night, it does whine a bit so I think the balance shaft belt is a bit to tight. But she runs!

However when I put my hood back up with the help of two friends we managed to crack the windscreen! I now have a smal crack in the bottum left corner of the windscreen.

How much does a new windscreen cost? (the one with the antenna in it) And is the windscreen interchangeble between the type 1 and 2?

It is very expensive, about 700euros the type1 and 2 are not interchangable.

Slight whine is good AFAIK, if you have none then the belts are actually a bit loose.

Any chance you can just get the crack repaired? If it's small enough then it might be do-able...

Otherwise there are some differencies in the windscreens, I believe the early models had it mounted differently (dunno if this affects anything, probably does)... and cars with air bags also had a different glass too. I'd try to get a second hand part from a scrap yard, new glass from Porsche is €€€€ for sure!

The crack is approximately 10 cm long, is it possible to have that fixed by a pro? I never heard of such a procedure before.

Whine seems to come from the balance shaft idle roller. Should the idle roller run when the belt is running, I've heard of the 0.5 mm distance between the roller and the belt. I don't use the special tension tool, I use the by-hand method and check regularly. It did it for a friend and his car has been okay for 5000 miles.

By the way, my local Porsche dealer even uses the by-hand method. They don't have the tool either. When I was there for some parts I needed some information and I asked some of the older mechanics, nobody could answer my questions. They have absolutely no knowledge of the 944. They only do new Porsches. In my opinion they do not repair, they replace.

I'm not sure if I got lucky or what, but mine was $400 installed with the antenna. Call around to all the atuo glass places arouns and ask. Try to get the Sekurit OEM glass.

944Targa-fan, you probably already know these, but they're a major Porsche dismantler in the Netherlands recommended to me in a European forum. I would call them to see if they have a used windshield. Some dismantlers do.

Good luck!

Luis, I've been to van Zweeden a couple of times and I'm sure they will have one, but I think they want me to get it out myself. Having tried that before at a Porsche 924 and breaking the windscreen at the attempt it may be wiser to buy one of the shelf. But at 700 Euro I'm considering waiting a while. Thanks for the advise.

I'd second the note about making sure it's a Sekurit windscreen. I used a replacement made by Pilkington and it cracked in under 200 miles.

I've owned 944 cars in the U.S. since 1994 until recently, and the better dismantlers only offer you parts they know are ready to be used. I'm sorry the van Zweeden guys aren't like that!
