New and got a question (power steering)
Hello all,
First off this site is awesome. I just bought my 944 and had tons of questions and most were answered just by searching, lots of great info!
My question: When I got the car home I noticed the power steering tank was dry. While driving I noticed the lack of steering "help" but there was no whine or noise. While changing the belts and going through checking stuff I noticed one of the hoses that goes into the steering rack was completely disconnected. It seems the hole in the rack is smooth on the inside and the fitting on the hose has threads? How do I reconnect this. I'll try to post a diagram of what I'm talking about. Thanks.
The car is a 1986 N/A 5 speed. 75,000 original miles, Im the 3rd owner and stoked about it.

Welcome to the list Braden and thanks for using the search function.
That is the compensating line. Though the ends may look threaded they are simply grooved to hold an o-ring, (possibly two on each side). Just press the tube ends in once new o-rings are in place. The number for the tube is 944 347 311 00 no number is listed for the o-ring, but I’m sure with some measurements you could find them at a hardware store.
FYI, this power steering system uses ATF not normal power steering fluid. Refill and look for leaks. Good luck!

Thanks for the quick response. I'm glad I just need o-rings, hopefully. I hope there is no other leaks. If there are, it seems, from what I'v read on here, that I can remove the PS belt but keep ATF fluid in, and it will stop leaks, just not have PS. Is that correct?
Thanks for the ATF reminder.

Thanks for the compliment fittrjoe. You can see one of the dents behind the front wheel, on the bottom of the fender, which is a bummer but hope to fix soon. BTW does anyone know what wheels these are? The PO said they were off a 928?

Nice car
These are phone dials, they were on 944 and 928.

Very nice car, and welcome to the addiction! I won't hijack your thread, so I will start another one, but I wasn't aware that I was not supposed to put power steering fluid in the system...
