Default Spacers on my 944 with Fuch's????

I just took my rear wheel off my '84 944 and found a huge spacer. I was surprised to see this. Is this because I am running Fuch's on this car and the offset was different?

If your wheels are "late offset" and they are being used on an "early offset" car, you would need about a 1" spacer to get back to normal. But folks can, and will, put on thicker spacers to increase the track width of the car, which theoretically will yield a small increase in cornering ability. The spacers on the back of my 1985 944, put on by the previous owner and using 968 wheels, are about 2 1/2" thick. There is certainly plenty of room in the rear wheelwell for this arrangement.

Perfectly normal to have those spacers on your early car running Fuch's,mine was an 83 had the same.Wheels were 16x 7.5.

It must be an offset thing. My 86 with early offset (23.3 mm) Fuchs had no spacers. As ernie9468 said, late offset (52 mm) would require a spacer to return to early offset, but the big fenders on a 944 mean you can space the wheels off stock by quit a bit. Also note that the driver's side is likely to be spaced outboard by 1/2" relative to the passenger side. This is due to the spring plate cover being attached to the chassis by a bolt in an elongated hole. The bolt apparently ends up toward the outboard side of the slot and the wheel follows.

Early offset cars with fuchs come with spacers, as well as longer studs from factory as the rims have a 911 part number.

Not so. The rear wheel on my car was an 8x16 Fuchs part number 951362117. No spacer. Nada. Not a 911 part number. Since it was an option, there weren't many around, and a common substitute was a 911 Fuchs.

The steel arm cars from 83-85 used spacers on the rear stock to achieve the standard track width.

The 85.5 and 86 cars using aluminum trailing arms did away with the spacers to achieve the standard track width. I believe the factory spacer is 21 mm, but I could be wrong.

My car is an 86 with Al swing arms, Fuchs and no spacers. Fits the explanation.

Yeah, I recall my BBS to be a 23mm offset on my early wheels for my 84, and they were the original wheels. The spacers I used to upgrade to late model wheels were pretty big spacers. Been running them with no problems what so ever though.
