I know about the butyl strip caulking, but I'm wondering if anyone has found another method which allows for a cleaner install. Possibly a strip of rubber weatherstripping that could be easily removed and less likely to muck up my new paint. Anyone?
Yup. I think I used McMaster Carr part number 93085K11. At the corners where it's too sharp for the seal to turn, I cut the gasket so the edges meet up flush, then glue them together with cyanoacrylate. I use two layers of this gasket material on the HVAC blower fan assembly too.
At 43¢/ft, I don't think you'll find anything as cheap at Home Depot, even including shipping. I don't think HD will even have it. McMaster's shipping is cheap and you'll have it the next business day.
itll leak like crazy.
i used a sticky-lined foam stuff to seal my lights, pretty much like that garage door weatherstrip stuff, worked great and not messy..
I did mine 2 weeks ago. I got some black RTV and it still leaked even after two tries. I probably didn't apply in a way that made contact all the way around, when I pulled it off I could see the areas that didn't seat even though it was a thick-*** bead. YMMV, I just applied it where I thought it was supposed to go but I guess I was wrong.
I ended up going for the butyl tape from NAPA and it was a breeze. One thing though... does anyone else have a black "eye liner" thing around the tail light after that stuff? This is the only picture I have handy of what I'm talking about. You can sort of see it on the passenger side tail light (corner).
