Angry Early Odometer stuck, $#%&!!

I could slap myself for not copying photo instructions on how to fix this! I've been told how to fix it, since allegedly it rarely goes bad:

"Have you taken apart the speedo yet? We don't carry the early gear because they very rarely fail. Alot of times, the gear will walk on the shaft. Push the gear back into position. Dab a hint of superglue there to keep it in place or put a c-clip on the shaft to hold it. Let me know what you find." Scott - KLA Industries

I think I saw someone with pics last week on how to do this, but I can't find the thread! I know, sounds easy, but someone had the pics.

Please help, I need to fix this tomorrow, along with other things. I need the Odometer fixed, so thank you for any help!

It shouldn't be too hard to take it apart and figure it out. I've had mine apart and it was no trouble at all. The early versions can't be THAT much different than the late models.....?

The early versions are easy to get out and take apart. Just make sure you don't remove the speedometer needle, or over twist it like me

I need to do this same thing again. It'll be the 3rd time I've had it apart

It isn't difficult, just don't want to break it more...I'm a little bit of a klutz at times. I have to put in a light in there tomorrow, can't see how fast I'm driving at night, lol!

Thats the first thing I did to my car. It just broke again, so I'm gonna be pulling it apart soon. I have an AP test tomorrow, so probably not tonight.
Do you know how to get the speedo unit out, and just need help with fixing the actual gear? I'll take some pics along the way and post them, maybe tomorrow.

Yes, I need help with the actual gear; I have a feeling it may be self explanatory, once I get in there; I also take that the light bulb that's blown out is in the cluster holder.

The 924's and early 944s have similar units? You pull the whole gauge cluster out on mine, then the individual ones come out like canisters from the back; you can't get into the glass area, I think, but you pry off the bezel from the rear, like you do a watch, with a very thin screwdriver.

She has to pass the complete Safety test, since she was made salvage by the dealer (nothing wrong with it, just he thought it was going to be a parts car or made into a race car).

Devia - you don't have to pull the whole cluster out (if you don't want to). In an early model, you can reach under the dash and poke out the one on the left, then reach in the hole and unscrew the speedo cable and poke out the odometer. That might save you a few minutes. You're right about the gear - it is self explanatory once you're in. The gear (that either walks the shaft or breaks) is very easy to get to. There are no other gears in the way (I was afraid there'd be like 32 inter-locking gears the first time I fixed mine).

Good luck.

Dale.

The can has a lip that is turned 90 degrees out from the body, so you have to pry up the bezel ring a little at a time to get it off. Just be careful, and it won't be noticable from the front. Remove the ring and plastic bezel. Remove the screws from the back and the whole insides slide out.

I fixed mine a few months ago. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 100 miles. Guess I'll go back in there and roughen the shaft and use JBWeld.

Good Luck.
