Default CV removal: STUCK cheeseheads

I'm actually trying to get the swing arms out (so I can remove the steel sleeves for the bushing and install monoballs). The 8 mm cheese head bolts on the new axle came out but the cheese head bolts on the original axle appear to have been torqued down by an angry German with a 4 foot breaker bar. Any advice on getting those puppies loose?

If they're on the transmission side, use vicegrips. If they're on the wheel side, drill them out.

Van, you're the man. As much as I'd like to leave the axle on the car, I'll try vise grips on the tranny side.

An air hammer gets them out everytime and with a lot less effort. I have fought with these many times and spent hours on a 30 min job. Then a friend (local porsche tech) stopped buy with an air hammer. 5 mins. and the 3 stripped bolts were out. Worth saving the time and just replacing the bolts. Use loctite and retorque to factory specs. They will back out on you, trust me I know from getting stranded. Good luck finding a 8mm chez head at a local hardware store.

I've gotten them at Napa and Sears before. It's called a "triple square".

For the air hammer method, I assume your friend uses a chisel and hammers on them at the edge at an angle to "hammer un-screw" them?

when you're attempting to get em out, make sure you clean the screws with brake cleaner or some sort of degreaser so there's no gunk between the screw and bit. also, wake up the bolts by giving it a few solid hits.

I'm confused as well. How is an air hammer gonna help? Or did you mean air impact wrench?

I did blow out the heads with compressed air.

And I ordered a small set of cheese heads so I have the tool, but they were also in Princess Auto (Canadian equivalent of Harbor Freight), so they're officially everywhere.

I have used these before.
I'm not sure which size goes around them, but one is a nice tight fit.

the brand was irwin. They were in a set that I borrowed from a friend.
I later bought a set for myself, worked GREAT

Don,

Looks good, but Irwin doesn't exist in the great white north. Sigh. Maybe snap-on has an equivalent.

Sigh. Snap-on canada is $28 delivered, for one (14mm, and I don't know if thats the right size), and $189 for a set. Guess I'll try a vice grip first. And second.

Update: Boy am I stoopid. What I thought was the tool jumping the slines was actually my cheapo ratchet jumping the splines. Switched to my (recently regreased ratchet) torque wrench and they all came out no problem, although they did make an unusual sound as if maybe they had been seated totally dry or something.
Anyhoo, now its on to removing the car from the parking brake cable. I think this may be the only car I've ever worked on where the disc came right off over the parking brake shoes. The wifes 850 was such a struggle.

What color should I paint the swing arm once its finally out?

Thats the racing answer. Paint also helps show cracking. Didn't Chapman also say that any race car that didn't fall to pieces after crossing the finish line was too heavy? While possibly true for a race car, I drove my car to and from DE events for over 15 years. Before something broke. And I crashed. Front sway bar bracket. Then someone said "never drive the race car TO the track". Feh. Not for me.

Default torque value

Doug, what torque value are you using for the CV bolts? IIRC its 30lbs. They shouldn't be that hard to remove. My next time at this I'll be using Ideola's locking bolts.
