Default F/S - '87 951 - The Ill Fated Rebuild - A Rennlist Legend

Well the time has come to part ways with The Ill Fated Rebuild. I can't even begin to put into words how I feel about this moment, but it is for the betterment of my future and something I must do.

For you members who may not know about this car, read on. You can search "Perry 951, Ill Fated Rebuild, and 944 Fest" and read for the next month to learn the Rennlist history of this particular car. You can also click on the "last" icon to go all the way back to June 2001. You'll see that this car has a history that is as old as Rennlist.

It's a 1987 951 that I restored from an engine fire from 2000-2003. The fire was not to the extent to cause the insurance company to total it, so it carries a clear title. The entire history is documented in over 2200 photos, numerous write ups and posts, and of course, through the history of Rennlist and words of the members who I'm sure will make a post about it.

Here's the details about "The Ill Fated Rebuild":
-1987 951, 161,500 miles on the body and interior; 28,000 miles on the full restoration. I am the 3rd owner. I purchased it in 1999.

Engine:
-Fully rebuilt 2.5L 1986 block converted to '87 belt routing w/tensioner and late balance shafts and covers. Block came from a wrecked '86 turbo with 41,000 miles. Bores are perfect. Pump and rollers new.
-Balanced and nitrided crank. Complete Goetz bearing set
-Early forged rods and pistons. Goetz rings
-Fully rebuilt head with 2100 miles on it and a perfect deck surface
-5 layer Cometic MLS head gasket, .060 to restore factory compression (installed this weekend)
-ARP bottom end stud kit
-Raceware Head Studs

Misc. Engine Stuff:
-New Lindsey Racing silicone hose set.
-Lindsey Racing Steam Vent
-All silicone pressure connections and vac lines.
-K&N cone filter
-JAZ catch can and opened oil separator for better flow
-All engine accessories (intake, pipes, etc) are powdercoated

Fuel, Turbo, Exhaust:
-Rains (Technodyne) KKK turbo, K27 center with milled 26 compressor housing and #8 hot side
-MBC connected to Delta Gate Racegate dual port wastegate
-B&B 3" Carbon Fiber Cat Back with oversized factory style oval tip
-Speedforce stainless turbo inlet
-Custom hard pipes
-Bailey 007 bypass/blow off valve
-42lb Delhi disc injectors with ballast resistors
-Fully adjustable fuel pressure regulator, 1:1 ratio
-Stainless braided fuel lines
-Summit Fuel Pressure Gauge with custom hose and mount.

Electronics:
-Vitesse Early 951 Chip mapped for MAF and 55lb injectors
-Huntley 47MM hotwire MAF with Split Second ARC-2-HR controller; factory temp sensor for automatic cold start calibration
-Tech Edge WBO2 wideband controller with display and onboard logging
-Thermocouples in turbo outlet, intercooler outlet, and exhaust CO2 port

Clutch and Driveline:
-Sachs cup. Holds fine but is at it's power limit with the car running 20/lbs of boost.
-Autothority Short Shift Kit
-New front and rear wheel bearings
-New GSK halfshafts
-New upper trans mount
-New factory engine mounts

Electrical:
-The original (and 2nd kit if I recall) Ice Shark Full Boat wiring kit
-Cibe headlights with overwatted bulbs
-Optima Red Top (still in excellent condition, tests perfect every time)

Chassis:
-Koni Yellow Adjustable Sport Shocks and Struts W/Bump Stops
-968 M030 30mm Front Sway Bar (purchased new)
-968 M030 19mm 3 Way Adjustable Rear Sway Bar (purchased new)
-SSI Performance Racing Brass/Steel Ball Joints
-Braided Stainless Brake Lines
-Metalmaster PBR Track Pads
-KLA Industries Strut Brace
-Rebuilt and Powder Coated Calipers
-New PS rack and pump

Body and Styling:
-Spies Hecker Single Stage 2K System Paint, Indescrodt with "B" tint code
-17" ATP Riva Rims, 8" Front, 9.5" Rear
-Bridgestone RE730 Tires, 225/45 Front, 255/40 Rear
-A.I.R. 944 Turbo Street Chin Spoiler

Interior:
-Porsche Script Floor Mats
-Custom Porsche Boxster Tequipment Shifter w/ Custom Shift Boot
-Perry 951 LED Lit Gauges and Controls (car has the first set produced)
-VDO Boost Gauge
-Kenwood 715S Head Unit With Dual Pre-Amp Out (not functional)
-Kenwood KAC-749S and KAC-729s Amps (Currently in my Audi and working great. Will swap back over if you like)
-Polk EX2540 4" Component Set (Front)
-Polk EX462A 2 Way 4X6 Plates (Rear)
-2 Kicker Solobaric 8" Subwoofers
-KLA Custom 8" Sub Enclosurs
-Stable Energies Fire Extinguisher and Seat Mount

A few notes:
-"New" items mean they were new with the rebuild, not used or remanufactured.
-The nose panel is no longer one with the car, and the chin spoiler is cracked but easily repairable. (courtesy of a truck tire) It has a stock black factory panel on it now.
-It needs front tires. Rears are still good. I have a full set of Bridgestone RE-760 Sports (235/45/17 and 275/40/17) that I'd be happy to have installed, but the price goes up a bit for them.
-AC has been deleted. I have two complete systems with split hoses that will go with the car.

Extra Goodies:
-A CD with all the photos, websites, write ups, etc that I've saved over the years. I even have the condolence e-mails when the car caught fire.
-Receipt book and CD (receipts scanned for insurance purposes)
-Complete set of factory owners manuals and the documentation from the previous owners.
-The factory phone dials also go with the car
-A complete printed set of PET manuals and the PET CD
-The very cool Road Dyno hardware and software so you can baseline performance and compare results when you make tuning adjustments
-A felt lined car cover from Performance Products
-A factory downpipe with hollowed out cat and a port for the WBO2 sensor
-A factory tire compressor

You can see a ton of photos at http://perry.type951.com/
This site has not been updated in a very long time, but the car is still in the same shape for the exceptions noted above. Select (Basic Entry as the Flash Site does not work). If you would like to see some of the photos of the rebuild, let me know and I can arrange to upload them for you to see. There are thousands, so please be specific on what you want to see.

I'm sure there are some things I'm missing, but this gives you a good rundown. I've documented $31,000 in parts, probably have $2500 in items that have not been entered into my excel file, and likely a few thousand more that I missed.

I'm asking $18,000 and am firm on this amount. I've promised the car to a few members who will take first dibs on it, but please do not be discouraged to contact me if you are interested. I can also arrange to ship it as I have access to a 27' enclosed trailer.

Thank you to the entire Rennlist Community for 11 years of wonderful Porsche Ownership. I'm sure I will get back in the game sometime in the future.

Brian (Perry 951)

I remember admiring your car years ago when I had a 951- how long have you owned it? Good luck with the sale!

In the event some of you are wondering (like the guys on the 928 forums);

It is as shown in the pics less the fancy nose panel.

The "Ill Fated" reference was given to me by John Dunkle, the fella that started this website. I had quite a few challenges during the restoration that he deemed it "Ill Fated". It's probably the most documented 944 on the 944/951 side of the forums.

Best of luck Brian -- I've also always admired your car (and your efforts and determination to get it to where it is now.) Another "old school guy" leaving the fold! (*sob*) Hope you make it back it into the game sometime soon. How does a 993 appeal?

Maybe taking a photo with the handicapped sign is sending the wrong message?

Out of all the details to look at in the pic, that is what stands out? Never saw it that way myself. There is a lot of interest from people in KC (car is listed on several enthusiast forums) so I might toss together a GTG before I send it off.

A few offers rolling in, but I'd really like to see a Rennlist member end up with it. Something about keeping it in the family.

Thanks all for your kind words.

great car man, honestly one of the ones that got me motivated to finally buy one (and mine's guard red and looks a heck of a lot like yours!). Not near as much work in mine, but then again, I drive it maybe 300 miles a month so it's just a fun toy for me. Hope a lister ends up with this one - I'd seriously consider buying from you if I were in the market right now. I

OP, That's probably the most beautiful 951 specimen that has ever existed. I'm honoured just to see pictures of it! GLWS... I wish I could buy it.

Well you're definitely not interested in the car. Did you notice the flattened slug at the bottom right, too? It's there.

I can't believe it's for sale! This car was loved, whoever buys it will be mega pleased I imagine.

In middle/high school (jeez I have been here too long - I was "Mike Markota") your car was the inspiration for me to get a 951 - just bad ***.

Just curious, what are you moving into from this?

Hi Mike! Yea, we've been around here a while. Kinda makes you feel a little old.

I'm in the end stages of starting a business and need the funds. It is very unfortunate, but it's an investment I made years ago and time to cash it in for the investment in my future. If things go well, I'll have many more toys to bring back to life.

It's this or retirement funds, and I'm not giving the gov't 40% in tax and 10% in penalty. It'd be a worse investment than the 951 was!

If only I left it stock......

Beautiful example of the breed!! Glad to see that I am not the only one who is asking over $15k for a 951.

I read your entire epic journey with this car...and I'm amazed at your herculean efforts to "keep her alive."

I would need to do an incredible amount of drugs, just to do what you did. So, what is the replacement?
