I also thought of Spencer...
I have a fire extinguisher. Some people laugh or comment when they see it, thinking I'm a hardcore racerboy, but the truth is I just want to put out any stupid fires before they eat my car!

Don't know witch year or models is your car 8 v or 16 v but fuel lines on 944 are pretty well routed the same, this is an early model if you look closely you'll see fuel line coming on top of the intake manifold (the one that has red tie-wrap on them) , you got one attache to the back of your fuel rail & the other one is call a return line those are the critical one in the engine bay since they are suject to heat generated by the motor & headers . Also if you look at the diagram(from Pelican) you can follow the fuel lines route rigth up to the gas tank ,check the hard line for rust or leaks specially where they couple to the rubber one, for any loose (clamps) or connection, pay special attention to the one around the gas pump # 29 & filter # 13.Any gas leaks the car stay put you fixe it first before driving.

The most vulnerable fuel lines are the rubber ones which just happen to be right over the #3 & #4 exhaust headers. Later 944s have the fuel routed as indicated below, my '87 NA was just like my '91 S3.

Another victim of environmentalist short-sightedness... mandated oxygenated fuels leads to disintegrating fuel lines, resulting in an exponential increase in vehicle fires and ground water pollution. Then, they blamed it on the oil companies.
My condolences to the owner.

You act like rubber fuel line is gonna age just like the rest of the 26+ year old car... those line are good for 5 years tops, anything past that is a auto-flambe just looking for a street corner to happen on...

I agree. I also don't like stainless steel braided line in this application. That's what came on my car which failed catastrophically. I was told they had just been replaced a year prior. I was fortunate that I was in the driveway with the hood up at the time, otherwise my car would have looked like the one in the first post. I have since re-routed my fuel lines around the back of the head and inspect them often. I expect to replace them every 1-2 years.

Oh! Marshmellows anyone? Another parts car anyone? Just trying to be positive here. As long as the owner didn't get hurt. Scary stuff when it happens on the street.
+2 on replacing the lines. Got mine done right away..My mechanic scared the begeezers out of me with his multiple stories of flame out 944's. It may not help with inspection, but there are some nice heat shielding materials out there. Not a bad idea just to keep the fuel from boiling in the summer!
