Angry ANOTHER WHEEL NUT TORQUED OFF!!!

AM I TH ONLY ONE CURSED WITH THIS??
I have officially torqued off another 368ft# rear left wheel nut. I replaced it with new when I had the bearing replaced because of the first time I threw a axle nut. Does anyone make a reverse threaded one for our cars. I'd also like a hole for a pin like the VW's have. Jeeze you'd think that if a 40hp bug needs reverse threads and a pin that a Porsche might have expanded on that technology. But no, just tighten it to 368 and thats it. Ok, I'll take a deep breath. At least I cought it this time before the nut came all the way off and I probably cought it soon enough to actually have saved this wheel bearing. Help me someone. I'm tempted to spot weld the darn nut onto the spline (not really)

Just a thought, If the original nut came off. I would assume there is some wear on the spline? if there was then every time you stopped and started you would rock the wheel back and forth? thus causing an unscrewing motion? just a thought.

Maybee I'm not taking into acount some physics variable, but my car DOES NOT put out 368 ftlbs of torque. So how is it that this nut is loosening. Seriously though, does anyone know of a spline that would work on our cars that has reverse threads, or a hole for a pin?

This is off the topic, but what tool / setup are you using to get the 368 ft lb ?? --Roy--

My Mechanic has a nice dial in 500ft# torque wrench. At present I've got a 2ft breaker bar that I put my 180lb self on the end of. Happy St. P's day everyone!

Bob

The nut is more or less self locking (less in your case).
Could be that the tread is a bit flattened at the top, caused by your previous encounter with the inertia of mass.
Try a light loctite retainer (blue)before replacing the stub.

Thanks Hans,

I would prefer to do a reverse threaded stub so the left side would tighten if anything, but It seems as though that isn't an option. I guess I will have to settle for the loctite. BTW, What is the difference between the red and blue loctite? I used the blue stuff at my last job and it seemed to hold up well. I did maintenance on a solder wave. That blue stuff held up on some bolts that were over a 500 degree solder wave sump.

Roberto,

Did you install a new Porsche nut? Or did you just install a new nut? If you didn't, make sure you install a new one from Porsche (it is ~$5).

I don't see why double nuting it would hurt.

Edit- This makes me think the threads on your axle may be damaged.

Hmmm, the threads could be toasted, eh? I'd go ahead and get a new castellated nut, install it temporarily and mark a hole. Remove and drill hole for in axle for cotter-pin. Also drill the nut for safety wire as well. Grease bearings and re-install hub. Put some blue Loctite on axle and install new nut. Line up with hole and install a cotter pin. Safety wire nut through hole and you're all set!

Finally I'm back. My home ISP has been down and I'm just not the type of guy to go into work on my day off just to surf. Anyway. Tabor, Yeah I used new nuts after the bearings were replaced. I'm assuming a new spindle may be needed now. For now I just retightened the new one, and have been checking it before I drive. Seems as though it has yet to re-loosen. I'm thinking that all that "experimenting" I did with rear wheel torque and left turns might have encouraged the nut to prematurely fail.

It's an '88 944NA with a 968 3.0L engine and 6 speed along with most of the suspension componets. From what I've read the 968 was originally going to be designated 944 S3 until Porsche changed the body style... but I could be wrong.

Hey, no Fair Redeye! Shaun, He's right. I'm actually considering making a badge for it that says 944S3. Redeye has ridden in it and he can vouch for the fact that it's not the same car anymore.
