Actually, the second generation RX-7 looks much more like the 944. Coincidence?

Probably not.

I always thought the 924 and 1st gen looked REALLY similar. Ever parked those side by side? Striking. Forget comparing it to a 944...

yup

a kit had a 924 autocrossing this past weekend, first time, and he was doing well

I was talking to someone else and mentioned my 944 and how I was - for some reason - in the same class as a E46 M3 and a turbo FC RX-7 ... and he said that a 944 is almost like the RX-7

really ... 924 looks more like an RX-7

Well yeah, the RX-7's were a rip-off of the 924/44's. It's no coincidence that they look alike!

i remember reading somewhere that the designer of the rx-7 looked at the 944 for inspiration. that could be completely wrong, not exactly sure on that.

The Conquest/Starion twins also have the wide-body look but not as smooth looking as the 944's.

considering the timeline when the rx7 came out in the 70s vs the 944 in the 80s more than likely the 924 since the rx7 was launched about a year or so after the 924 came out, they look very very very similar. I could see where it would be 924 inspired. Unless you're talking about 2nd gens?

Last season as we were signing the waivers at MAM, one of the guys posted at the gate asked us what year our Shelby was...

the first gen (sa) rx7 is an obvious ripoff of the 924 and the second gen (fc) was redesigned much like the 944

from the wiki:
The second generation RX-7 ("FC", VIN begins JM1FC3 or JMZFC1), still known as the Savanna RX-7 in Japan, featured a complete restyling reminiscent of the Porsche 944 or Porsche 924. Mazda's stylists, led by Chief Project Engineer Akio Uchiyama, focused on the Porsche 944 for their inspiration in designing the FC because the new car was being styled primarily for the American market, where the majority of first generation RX-7's had been sold. This strategy was chosen after Uchiyama and others on the design team spent time in the United States studying owners of earlier RX-7's and other sports cars popular in the American market. The Porsche 944 was selling particularly well at the time and provided clues as to what sports-car enthusiasts might find compelling in future RX-7 styling and equipment.

the rx7 is a nice car, but i find their design soulless (due to the blatant ripoff)
