Running without oil cap?
At the autox at tobay beach that I went to with my brother, I topped up the oil prior to my 3 last runs. However, I forgot to put the oil cap back on. I noticed this at the end of my 3 runs. No oil sloshed out or anything.
Is this a big deal? Could anything bad have happened?
Today, it seemed like the injectors were louder than usual...but I may be drunk.
thanks,
Adrial

I would not think there would be a problem if no oil came out the top of the tube and you had good pressure.
I had a mech put the oil cap on incorrectly during a club race weekend and wound up with oil all over. The pressure was good and the only reason I found out about it was b/c I got the meatball from the cornerworkers.
I was just glad the car was a rental.

I thought a little while back somebody asked about driving w/o the cap, and the consensus was that it could mess up systems that read/rely on the crankcase vacuum, so don't do it, but I can't imagine it causing permanent harm. A search is in order. Hell, might have cooled your oil a little more.

Some jerk stole the cap out of my beater ( audi 4000s quatt) while I was at work the other week, as a joke. The cap sits in the cam shaft housing. I have never seen that much smoke before. I think there was at least 3 quarts of oil that splashed out, all over the motor.

Way back when JiffyLube forgot to put the cap back on my 924 after replacing my oil/filter. About 20 miles later, I notice my engine smoking and when I lift the hood, there was oil everywhere.
I would think it would splash or spray out, but maybe if there is no pressure (cuz the lid is missing) it doesn't necessarily spray out of the filler, just splashes out.

When I was in high school all of my friends drove Mustang 5.0's and took pride in performance enhancements. One of my buddies had a "crank case breather." To me it essentially looked like an oil cap with a filter to keep out dust, etc. If this is the case then the pressure shouldn't be an issue.

You might even have evaporated off a bit of condensation, of course you might have a little more condensation in there in the first place. Maybe an oil change would be a good idea, in case of contamination. .02, YMMV.

Buddy of mine left his off on a 951 at Road America. Only took a lap or two to flag his wildly-smoking car into the pits. It was a funny story, but very lucky there was no underhood oil fire. Yikes!

I'm pretty sure the cap was off while I was running the car. After each run I checked the oil pressure and temp and it all checked out. Coolant temp was lower than expected and oil pressure was a little high. hehe.. oopsies. At least you found the cap.
