Need help ASAP.. manual racks unavailable?!
I need a manual rack for my 1983 944..
Autozone usually carries these rebuilt units by 2 different companies. Both companies are out of cores and have no racks in stock.
Is there another option?
Can I use a power rack with no fluid in it or something like that?
I already called the guy who was selling one on eBay last week that didn't meet reserve. He wants $400 plus shipping and it's a used unit, not rebuilt.

$400 for a used manual rack? That's crazy. I think I paid like $100 for mine. See if maybe Griffith's has a remanufactured unit that they will sell outright (without a core).

If you want a good used unit at a fair price try DC Automotive in Bridgeport, CT. I bought seats from the owner, Robert. He seems honest.
Otherwise, does anyone know if an accomplished do-it yourselfer can get a kit to do the rebuild himself?

Some guys say you can't or shouldn't drive the power rack as a manual but I've been doing it on and off for the last 2 years. When I bought my car the input shaft on the rack leaked so I pulled the belt and drove around for a year without the power steering. Last spring I replaced the seal and put the belt back on. After 6 weeks or so the center portion of the p/s pump tension rod vanished and I've been back to manual. It operates just fine while driving but tight parking is a bitch as with any manual steering car that I've owned. I do have a new tention rod and will hook the pump back up when I can get out of work at a reasonable time. I do prefer the power steering.

Found a used one locally that is gauranteed to have no play and no binding for $165.
As long as it feels better than what I have, I'll be happy

What happened to the one you have if I might ask?
Regarding Griffiths, they are pricey, but their products are remanufactured to better than original new. Not saying that is the way you should go, just pointing out that you wouldn't be buying just a used or rebuilt rack.

The boots have apparently been torn for a long time before I bought the car which caused the main shaft in the rack to rust near the ends. The car is much more difficult to turn than it should be. There is also substantial up and down play in the rack on the passenger side.
I'm picking up new inner and outer tie rod ends as an assembly and having them put on the used rack and installed.
I just (today) put my new tires on and I'll have the rack / alignment done next Monday.
Should make a nice difference in the way the car feels going down the road.
