Thanks for all the help btw.[/QUOTE: Why buy an S2 without the motor when you can get a very decent & good shape one for the money your gone to spend on that conversion.S2 power power is not to be sniff at,figure it out maybe something like 22 HP less than the 968 ,witch you can bring up another 10HP by doing little mods to it.The advantage here is that you'll retain the flavor of the 944 line with the 968 3.0 ltr block, plus having a car witch suspension wise is almost the same as the 968, and not having the problems & the work of doing this mod.I really think it will be the most cost efficient way of doing thing.

What ernie said, buy an S2 or a 968. You'll be better off and do a lot less work.

You do have to jump through hoops to get the A/C working. My dad had to rig it up manually to get it working in his 68 swapped S2. If you swap into a 1991 s2 its plug and play.

Nope. I understand what you guys mean but I want to do this not only because of the power but for the experience itself. It will expand my knowledge of cars a whole lot to undertake something this big. I want that experience.

when i did mine, i just looked around for an insurance sale, picked up a totaled 968 around 4k the whole swap was pretty easy took me a little over 2 weeks working on it a couple hrs a day. would have went faster if i wasn't doing it by myself, but i did have 2 lifts which made it super easy.

what is so different about the ac wiring?

for my own illogical nonsensical 3.0L plans, would i be better off just using an 89/90 S2 motor?

I am doing some research on this swap for my 87 NA as well. Here are some notes I have gathered so far. Please feel free to add anything I am missing or point out any errors. I would also like to know about the AC situation. A guy from this forum told me it was a whole separate system, and the swap won't affect it?

To Buy:
968 motor
Engine harness
DME
Throttle cable
(buying a wrecked 968 would be best)
S2 clutch/flywheel set up
S2 transaxle (optional, but recommended)
951 radiator (optional)
After market oil cooler

Exhaust
- Stock exhaust can be used, but flanges on 968 header needs to be rotated

Cooling
- 951 radiator is 1" taller and may help with cooling (optional)
- Use aftermarket oil cooler for ease of mounting location

Drivetrain
- For S2 transaxle, use stock torque tube, stock bell housing, S2 flywheel/clutch (same for 951 transaxle)

Fuel
- Make custom fuel lines through Rennbay

Electrical

14 pin connector at brake booster
o Pin 7 on chassis harness must not have 12V. The 944 models have term 85 grounded directly. Remove this wire or you will fry the DME! Pin 12 will need a 12V switch source

DME plug at footwell
(still confused about this. is this a plug near the DME? or does it actually plug into the DME? im pretty sure the 944 DME doesnt only have 4 wires going to it)
o The 968 will have 14 pins (smaller one is for tiptronic)
o 944 connector will be a 4 pin
o 968 DME pin 7 will need a 12V switch source

Misc
- use 968 flywheel sensor on S2 mounting bracket

Thanks. Can anyone clarify what plug Todd is talking about at the DME footwell? This is what it says on the website:

"Connector DME Passenger Footwell
(14 pin for 968 (smaller is tiptronic connector), 4 pin for 944 and 8 pin for 944 S"

If anyone is doing this I think I have an S2 flywheel and bellhousing stashed somewhere. Probably with a clutch as well.

the 968 engine is very sleepy. it doesn't wake up until you start winding it past 4,500 rpm.


your 944 tub will last for a long time... for only a little more aggrivation you can go Chevy LSx.

My plan is an S2 supercharger set up similar to SFR's S2 bolt-on system. It can be done for less than a swap....@ 1/2 the price.

I'd love a LS1 swap (don't get me wrong - just look at DVC's awesomeness) but I still lean towards keeping it all Porsche under the hood.

I like the 968 swap as well for this reason.

5k is a lot better than I would estimate. The project I'm still contemplating for my 951 is starts at roughly 11k. I've always heard from guys that do/ have done builds is, "Budget high for what you're looking to do, adding every expense you may or may not end up with... Take that price, and double it. Then determine if it's worth your time and money."

Frankly, I could easily see my project taking $20k, with all the fixing up and extra work. But that's because I'm looking into a big resto-project, slash weekend fun and track car. And yes. That price tag is on a stock 2.5 block (bolt-ons only) which will should be putting out about 320-350ish. Nothing really really crazy.

Ever heard of Renegade Hybrids? A 968 motor would be hella cool, but at the same time... For the cost of your investment and the availability of the motors, you could own and swap an ls1, make 100hp over the 3.0liter and have an absolute sleeper!

Well I'm under the belief of keeping it all porsche under the hood too so I'm not going to LS swap. My plan is to drop in the 968 engine and SuperCharge it and make about 300-350hp. I will be content with that. It is my goal. And that's what I'm sticking to for now. I really don't see me being unsatisfied with what I'm doing and I'll easily have a 300kph(185mph) car. I'm just trying to have a quick car to drive around and possibly convert it to a track car one of these days down the road.
