Default 968 Engine into 86'944 NA

I'm considering this swap on my car and have some questions. How hard is this to do and is there any mods that need to be done to make it work.? Any help would be appreciated.

Engine itself drops straight in. You will need various things like harness, ECU, etc...Will probably be pretty pricey!

I am contemplating doing the very same thing... Been shopping around looking for the parts to assemble. Apparently, the 968 engine will liven up the ride considerably.

Makes for a great car. I've built one that was killed on the track in May (Franky I - 968 powered 924S) and am in the midst of building Franky II (supercharged 968 powered 944S). The first build was documented on this board, search "924S3 update" for the thread. The second build is also here, search "resurrecting frankencar".

Quite a few people have done this build and are here for help if you need it.

it essentially gives you nearly 100 more hp and about the same gain in torque without gaining any serious weight to the car.

Alright thanks for the insight. About how much does a 968 engine(plus components for the swap) cost.? And would you also need to switch the trans.?

Highly variable and it depends on what you end up swapping. Engines run from 2,500 to 3,500. You can run a 944 transmission as long as you are not beating it, but an S2 transmission is the best option. Of course then you will want to add LSD so that you can use the power. You will need to upgrade the clutch as well. You are likely looking at 5K by the time it's done.

That's not as bad as I was thinking it would be. Looks like I'm gonna become an engine swapping type of guy. Lol. And couldn't you just add in the 968s 6spd trans with little difficulty? Or is that more trouble than its worth.?

Also would you recomend me trying to just buy an S2 without a motor and then do the swap or just do it in my NA 86'..? Which is the easiest/most cost efficient.? Thanks for all the help btw.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if you do the trans you will need the torque tube as well.

I've been down that path -- and in my opinion, you do something like this because you like to work on interesting projects. If you start worrying about "easiest" or "most cost-efficient", you might as well just buy a 968 (or an S2).

As for the 968 tranny, depends on what you use your car for -- I actually do not like the taller gearing on the 968 tranny.

The swap is just plug nd play. It is a good engine to put into our cars and adds uniqueness to it. But its not as easy as pie you gotta find the engine and the rest of the stuff which is another topic.... Just search 968 swap and you'll see lots of topics. Browse the 968 forum for more knowledge on the car and engine. I've considered it as well but if I'm going to do an engine swap I'd go for the lsx engine swap. Just my two cents.

Also, I heard if you do the 968 swap, do you loose the AC ?? Correct me if I'm wrong.

@josephsc- I understand what your saying but settling is not something I'm good at. I put the idea in my head that I want a 944 with a 968 engine in it and that's what I'm gonna get no matter what. And by saying "easiest/most cost efficient" I meant not wasting money on unneccesary stuff I don't need to do. Not that I wanted to do this project el cheapo or something like that. Haha.

And which trans would be best for racing/hard driving.? This car isn't going to be babied so Ill need the most reliable out of all of them(968/S2).

951 trans with LSD should be strong enough.

The stock trans will work until you find an S2 box which is ideal for this swap, just don't go crazy on burnouts etc.

The torque tube is the same.

When you are installing the new engine, make sure you replace the clutch while its out and easy access.

I don't think you lose the a/c either, someone else knows better than I.
