Post Did 924 come to Canada in 86?

I'm talking with a women on the phone who knows nothing about the 924 she is selling (death in family) and she says the ownership says 1986 924.

Did Porsche bring in the small 4 in 86 or could this only be a 924S with the 2.5 litre?

Thanks in advance, Keith

1986 was the first year that Porsche introduced the 924S with the (detuned) 2.5L 944 engine producing a sub-par 150 HP. If it is an '86, it's gotta be a grey market one because Porsche didn't start importing the 924S to North America until '87 (with the 160 HP engine). Also, '82 was the last year in North America for the 2.0L unit.

Dawg, thanks for that. It turned out to be a 87 924S and I snapped it up.

So I can tell folks that my unit has a 160 HP motor? Excellent.

The compression/leakdown test was
1. 160/175
2. 150/165
3. 150/160
3. 148/155

Unit has 97,000 miles. Do those compression numbers sound alright?

Congrats, the spread between high and low is a bit more than ideal (edit; leakdown only, compression looks great), but they're good numbers. It should last you a while before you need to worry about it. How does the maint. history look? Is everything up to date?

Dave, yes things seem to be EXTREMELY up to date. I could not pass on this. The work was done at a Porsche race builder called Mantis Racing Inc. near Toronto.

Here are some of the items from the inspection/work order.

Battery, Hood Struts, Roof Lifting Gear, Machine Flywheel, Rear Main Seal 944, Release Bearing, Clutch Pressure Plate, CV Grease 100G Tube, Cam Box End Gasket, Air Filter-73320 Porsche, Water Pump, Phospahte Free Coolant, Balance Shaft Belt, Cambelt, Cambelt Sprocket, Roller Cam Belt, Bosch Ignition Rotor 333 944, Bosch Distributor Cap 325, Alternator Belt, Serpentine Belt, Heater Control Valve, Sway Bar Bushing; tranny, rear end & oil change all with Mobil 1 fluids plus coolant flush and AV test.

Seller paid all repairs. I paid about $5000 US or $8000 CDN.

Car is mint, original owner, original dark blue paint, air works, windows work, everything works actually, very weird looking original spare and jack in rear, pads are 75% but rotors are at minimum, needs bigger tires immediately.

I'm very pleased.

Being an 87, you have the "low" compression 147hp engine. The high compression, 160hp engine was introduced in 88 for the 924S. Don't be too worried though, it's only a couple of tenths behind the 88 car for 0-60 and 1/4 mile and loses maybe, 3-4 mph top-end. It'll still blow away any N/A 944 you come across. Of course, a quick chip swap with a Weltmeister unit will bring your 87 up to 165hp, no sweat.

Yes, I looked the different years up and the 87 has 9.7:1 a compression ratio and the 88 has 10.2:1

Exc, what would a chip cost in CDN buckaroos? You would need a cold air package and a better exhaust to make it worthwhile or does the chip create power on it's own? How does it creat power on it's own without more air. Advanced timing?

All answers appreciated.

Is that the car advertised for sale at Mantis?
Also on the UCR site?

How does a chip work? Your guess is as good as mine! As you suggested, it probably does play with timing as well as air/fuel ratios and volume, etc. Again, I don't know. Performance Products sells it alone for $299.98US but also includes it in a kit along with a K&N filter and Throttle Response Cam for $342.71US. That's the set-up I'm looking at for my 87 924S. With conversion to CDN$, I'm guessing around $500 or so. When it comes down to it, $25CDN per horsepower is darn cheap!

Yes, that is the car. Strange story. I drove from Owen Sound down to Hamilton on Tuesday to look at this "924" but it really turned out to be a 85 1/2 944. The lady on the phone was totally ignorant of this 944 so I made the trip (half in snow/April???). I'll spare the details, but the 944 sucked.

However, that night I also talked to another seller in St. Catherines who told me about these Mantis Racing folks on Speers Rd. in Oakville if I ever needed excellent service. Since I was heading to T.O. on the QEW, I decided to call in and check the place out and see if they had any leads on a good car. I finally found the place and just went in cold and there it was along with a 86 mint black 944 for $12500. The car is in the original owners name so no GST.

I must say these Mantis folks are beyond praise.

EXC: I just noticed that your 924S is red. That is my preference as well.

The blue is OK, it would be my next choice. Just that red is well, RED!

Rothmans: My son stuck the Mantis 924S up on the web at www.bmw.canadianwebs.com

That's his text on there, he is 15 and looking forward to his birthday!

Yeah, red looks amazing on these cars. It's probably the most classic colour on the 924S/944 even though, these days, red is a little out of fashion on new cars. Who cares?! I love red cars! Anyway, I just picked mine up a little over a month ago for $8350 CDN in Alberta. It has just 75,000km on it and is in really nice shape. Here's a couple of pics:

Yours looks great, by the way. I'm assuming that the car has been repainted by the location of the 924S decal on the rear, it seems about an inch or so low. Don't feel bad, mine was repainted too and has no badge at all! The black decals have been discontinued but I believe that the silver ones, like yours, are still available... for now! Might want to buy one as a spare just in case, you never know when some idiot is going to plow into the back of you with their car. I almost bought it tonight by some backwards-hat kid in a Hyundai that was closing fast for a better look at the car.

Nice pics. You got a great deal!! My 924S has 173,000 km! Obviously your unit was not "Alberta" winter driven. Just as well, man is it cold there!

The bill from Mantis Racing to the seller was approx $4,200 (taxes in) so that makes me feel a little better about my 8 grand.

That car was really nice! Ernie does great work so you know the car is perfect. Plus he's a real honest mechanic.
Keith, do you know if that 944 in Hamilton is still for sale? Do you have any details on it? I am looking for a beater right now.
Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!!

Keith,

Congrats on the 924S purchase--they are very nice cars. You shouldn't fret about it being blue--that is one of the "rarer" colors. The majority of the 924S's were either Red, Black, or White. Blue is uncommon, while Gold is the "rarest". Enjoy the car.
