I would try them out the worst that could happen is they don't work out and you need to go back to the drawing board. I would be all about some slimmer fans to clean up the engine bay a little bit.

Bearings usually can not be replaced on a cheap fan as they are cast into the motor housing. The good ones normally you can replace but ofter time just the motor is a better solution.

Cheap fans are just not worth it on a PIA location as a 944, sooner or later they will stop working. Usually sooner.

huh...i've been looking at mounting some aftermarket fans on my radiator, since i'd like a little more cooling power for those really hot days...

has anyone actually tried aftermarket fans on a 944 with success? any brands you'd recommend?

I have used the Dodge Intrepid dual fan setup on many V8 builds. dual fans with high and low speed. Fairly easy to fit and a tad thinner that the 944 stock setup. Can be easily wired to use the stock 944 sensor and to come on low with the AC.

do you know what the CFM rating is on them? good idea on the intrepid fans DFW, do you have any tips or a write up for wiring them in? stuff like that still scares me even after completely rewiring my engine...

There are 2 versions one is 3000 - 3500 (low high) and the other is 3500 - 4000.

The 4000 is easy to identify as it has a spider web look on the fan supports.

1) Attach to rad
2) wire it up

There is a second number that isn't being published on fans, the static pressure at the CFM they are quoting. It is meaningless to list a CFM without it. If they published the SP along with the CFM, you'd see some real differences between OEM and the cheapos. I would especially be cautious about fans that claim to work as either pushers or pullers, you can only do that with an inefficient blade design. Not likely to work well in either mode.

related question, does anyone know for sure if a late NA radiator is shorter heightwise than an early one?

i know the late upper rad frame is lowered substantially to clear the IC space and that the rad would be pushed down a good bit as a result. but to avoid getting too low and risk damage the rad would have to be shorter...???

Great Point. I have always been told that by someone far wiser than me, that an efficent blade is made to pull OR push air. If you are choosing an aftermarket one avoid ones that do both. I once wired up an appliaction specific fan wrong, was pushing not pulling and it sounded like a weed eater. Led me to believe it was ment to go one direction only.

The higher end push or pull are normally "convertable" that is to say the blade is able to unbolt and flip over, not just reverse the wiring like the cheap ones.
