I understand the dolly works fine, but that U-haul won't let you use it to haul a P-car.

So just tell them it's a '81 VW Rabbit like everyone else does. No problem! (It is really a just a VW isn't it?)

I have used a UHaul and a Penske, the Penske equipment is much much better and you can usually get them to discount the truck rent down to $.20 a mile. Neither company will rent their equipment to move a P-Car, so I just lie and tell them it is for an 1983 BMW 325 and they have no problem.

But I should have mentioned that I always use a trailer. I have also just taken the larger truck and put the car in the back and load/unload at a dock.

Why are they such jerks about P-cars? I would imagine a '83 BMW would be the same price range as a '83 944.

I pulled a 951 on a U-Haul trailer from Tuscaloosa, AL to Charlotte, NC. No problems. It had to go on backwards. The front bumper cover hit the stops on the front of the trailer.

Strapping the hatch down is a good precaution.

You can get around Uhaul by telling them you're towing an '89 VW GTI. The only problem is that their insurance wouldn't cover you if you had a wreck. I just did it with Budget and it went fine. I had my fingers crossed for the whole 600 mile ride though.

Also, the nets that slip over your wheels to tie the car down only accept 16" wheels max.

I buy a tow bar for $150 assuming your suspension is good and save lots of money in the long run if you have to haul that thing for long distances later.

Of course you wouldn't tow an automatic very far on the drive wheels cuz the tranny's pump wouldn't run & you'd risk frying it.

I used a U-Haul tow dolly to pick up my car after i purchased it as the clutch was blown out. i got mine on nose first, with 3 people. drove very smooth all the way home, even on expressway......good deal
