Post #000 steel wool ok to use on glass?

Hey guys, I'm trying to get some stinkin' overspray from the last paint job (actually, I think it is primer..) off of the interior surface of my hatch glass. Paint thinner and a rag isn't cutting it, and I cannot get a razor blade in between the defroster lines wthout damaging them.

I have some raelly fine #000 steel wool - can I use that with the paint thinner without scratching the glass? It would suck to end up with a permanent fog...

I would not do it since I was able to scratch the glass of a toyota corolla with the rough side of the dishwashing scrubbing pad, which I would imagine is better than steel wool. Using carb cleaner worked better for me than paint thinner.

Be careful with carb/paint cleaner, takes paint off, too...

If you use the steel wool it will probably scratch the glass.

You could try polishing it down with Cesium oxide (contact any optical shops in your area) but it won't be easy. And could just as easily damage the defroster strips.

Get a small exacto blade with a flat front edge (compared to the slanted one) and do it with care.

I don't think carb cleaner will damage the paint if you wax right after unless you have real cheap paint. Use cloth dampened with carb cleaner and wipe the glass until the paint is gone. If you get cleaner on the paint use wax immediately after and you will be fine. If you have spray can paint on your car it will take your paint off.

we use steel wool all the time on glass at work, I don't know the type off hand, but we use it on 130,000$ cars and it doesn't scratch the glass. ( I work at a BMW/Mercedes dealer in the summers)

I used regular steel wool on my 83 944's rear hatch and it DID scratch the glass. Be careful. I have no idea what grade or number regular steel wool is - test in an inconspicuous place first.

I'd use a solvent stripper for that. Try Toluene.

get the finest steel wool you can find and use that.it works,i took alot of paint and some other stuff off my glasses.but make sure you use some type of lubricant when using steel wool,it protects it from scratching the glass and it grabs all the dirty stuff.ive been using this method for a long time and i never scratch any glasses.btw,it works on taking rust of metals.hope this helps
