So you want to paint your car (with pictures)
Okay guys, I decided to do a write-up on my car’s progress as much for posterity’s sake as anything.
I bought the car over 2 years ago for $4,500. It had 78,XXX miles on it and ran great but needed the usual work. It had Fuchs and Pscript seats so I was pretty happy. It did/does have some glitches with the main being a 15 foot paint job in Guards Red (originally Garnet). It became apparent during the re-paint that the car had been sprayed several times with not the best of care by the painter(s) with significant overspray everywhere. PO also shabbely applied silicone to the roof to keep it from leaking. Big mistake!
After talking with Terry S. (951and944s here on the board) and discussing the paint color with many of you on the board (remember that thread with all of the photoshop skills used on the car sitting in front of the police car) I decided on my all time favorite Porsche color, Arena Red. I’ve loved that color since I first saw the “Kills Bugs Fast” ad in Road & Track. Arena is a similar shade to Garnet but uses more pearls and has smaller metallic flakes.
The car was dropped off at Terry’s shop and his long, tedious and meticulous job began. First up was to take away the original rock guard (rubbery textured stuff) and pull out the 8” long dent in the passenger side rear fender. The dent was pulled out meticulously to perfect shape. Terry also stripped all Guards Red and in many places even the OEM Garnet was stripped. Interesting things can be hidden under layers and layers of paint. Dents, scratches, gouges were all found and fixed correctly. The hood turned out to have been replaced and the PO never primered or sealed it but painted directly on bare metal. The front bumper was layered several mm’s thick with paint. Everything that could come off the car to be prepped for painting came off. This included rain gutters, doors, headlight covers, nose panel, bumpers, sunroof (after razor bladding the silicone), mirrors, door handles, rear valence, hatch, hood, windows etc. etc. etc.
He applied new rock guard, pulled every dent to perfection primered, sealed, base coated, clear coated, wet sanded and buffed each and every panel including the door handles. It took months and months of handwork and skill to bring the individual car panels back to life. A few mods were made like venting the nose panel, polishing the intercooler, fabbing a polished aluminum duct work to the intercooler, adding a GT racing splitter, 930S wheel, SFR short shift (thanks Mledbetter) with Momo Cobra ****, and 17” Technology Twist wheels with cloisonné crests carrying Yokohama tires, SFR fuel lines, personalized license plate (951trbo).
I also found out that it took an incredible load of new parts to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. Just about every rubber exterior piece had to be replaced. No way I could go back with old rubbers when the paint was new. Short list of pieces that were replaced, and I probably have missed several:
Hatch seal, hatch receivers, hatch pins, silver turbo insignia, bumper guards, hatch keyhole rubber surround, sunroof seal and felt, sunroof interior fascia, door gaskets, door glass surround felt and gasket, door latch gaskets, door catch gaskets, door switch gaskets, door handle gaskets, mirror gaskets, gas door bumpers, gas door inner gasket, hood inner bumpers, hood liners, front turnsignals, crest and gasket, faded Turbo decal for front passenger side fender, and probably 20 other pieces.
Well after months of weekends of putting the car back together it’s done and here are a few pictures. I plan on taking it to a better spot for some more pictures this weekend so forgive me if I update you guys with some improved pics.

It has my 3 year old son's approval

Again, my son. He's a bigger Porsche fan than myself and one of his first words was Porshah (to my wife's dismay).

Big props to Terry S. and his son as they did an incredible job. No leaf was left unturn and the car went from a 15 footer to a 15 milimeter or less. Now for the rest of the projects.

WOW. That really is a great color. Excellent paint job. I think you should post some interior shots as well.

Another cool picture. Kind of reminds me of the intro to Need for Speed; Porsche Unleashed.
