Fast clicking no start... (yet another no-start thread!) - thanks!

I've searched around and can't quite find any posts that meet the exact symptoms I'm getting so worth asking...
My '86 turbo won't start.
I turn the key all to position two (one before the position for starting) and the fuel gauge goes up and so does the turbo gauge (to mid-way).
I then turn the key to start and get the following:
- very fast clicking noise from the fuse box
- dash lights flash on and off
- starter doesn't turn at all
The rest of the electrics seem ok (alarm, doors, windows...).
I swapped the DME relay (simply because it seems to be a common cause of starting problems) but not much luck.
Any thoughts?

One more point (which may well be totally unconnected).
A couple of times since this issue started, when I turn the key (position 3) the revs gauge goes all the way to max and then back down.

can you pinpoint the source of clicking? must be a relay doing that. i've had that happen when the starter solenoid wire wasn't attached tightly, but that wasn't on a porsche.

I learned a lot about batteries the other day on my Harley. Apparently an Alt. will never charge a battery 100% it only bring it back to it's previous power point so 60% and 10amp instead of 100% and 14amps. Try replacing the batter first with a working on from another car. If that's not the problem then good luck with the rats nest of wires!
Hope you do get it started though!
