What else to replace with Timing Belt
I know this topic has been beaten to death, but what else is crucial to replace besides the timing belt. The last thing I need is a bunch of things breaking because I didnt replace a freaking belt. I looked in the archives but im still very confused.
Currently my car is vibrating really bad and im sure its the motor mounts. So right now, I wanted to get motor mounts, and the timing belt replaced all at once. I was just curious as to what else would be beneficial to replace along with this. Any other belts?
Ive given my car a tune up (spark plugs, filters, coolant flush, Dist cap, rotor). Is there anything else that I need to do?
Also, I know that I should go OEM on the motor mounts, so does anyone know where i can get them for a fair price? Also any other parts that I need, please tell me where the best place to get them would be.
Oh and finally, how much do you think it would cost to have a mechanic do the mounts and Tbelt? How many hours of labor is that usually?
thanks

If you are going to have the timing belt replaced it is a good time to do the water pump too. Also there are two belts involved (don't forget the balance shaft belt). If your car has high miles (100,000+) I would have all the belt rollers replaced too.
I have done all of this myself so I can't tell you how much labor is. I have seen prices in the area of $500 for just the belt job. Add even more for the engine mounts.
I have used Vertex for parts and I am quite happy with their service. As long as you don't need the parts the next day (which I don't) they have good prices.
Good luck,
Scott

My car is in the shop AS I WRITE THIS getting the motor mounts changed. $180 labor, plus $200 for the mounts. He'd use aftermarket parts if I suplied them but I told him to use Porsche parts after posting about this the other day. List was $135 each...but with the original Turbo part number list price was $186 each!!!!
Anyway, yes do your waterpump (if it locks up same result as broken T-belt). Do the thermostat at the same time. Watch for the oil-in-water cooler seals issue. Other than that you've done most of the important stuff. Enjoy!
Man, I am praying the motor mounts make as big a change as everyone says!

I do all my own work and it has been several years since I worked at an independant Porsche shop, so I cant give you an idea on job cost. Time wise it will be a few hours, depending on labour rate, my guess 400-700$
When replacing the t-belt it is common practice to replace the front seal as well. The water pump with a new t-stat and seal should be replaced as well. The tensioners and idlers should be checked also.
Are there any oil leaks? balance shaft housings?
Good luck.

Don't forget balance shaft belt, tensioners, seals.
Its cheaper labor wise to do it all at once,
ask me how I know.

After reading the responses, Im considering trying to tackle this job by myself. How difficult is it to change the timing belt? I found instructions for the Motor mounts and they dont seem that bad and no special tools are required. What about the TBelt? Any other other caveats...advice?

The engine can be lifted from underneath, then suspended from a piece of steel or wood across the fender wheels.
~edit: oops, wells
Good luck.

If your car is "shaking" make sure your balancing belt is not broken. I had mine happen last year and it would only seem to "shake" while I was driving on the highways (low speeds/revs were fine).
Good luck,

Detailed instructions are available from Paragon, give them a look.
Not to open a giant thread but I was just talking to another Rennlister offline about the use of the "self tensioner" built into 87's and newer vs the need to have the special tool. My take has been not to rely on the auto tensioner. He HAS relied on it. What's the consensus? Rely on it or not?

Replacing the belts is failry easy if you are patient...I can forward some info to you if you wish....
TO just take a peek....undo the timing covers...they are held on by 10mm head bolts. just have a look. the bal belt is the one w/ teeth on bost sides.
you can loosen the accesory belt by removing the 'turn buckle' style adjusting bar at the bottom of the motor attached to the a/c compressor. loosen the a/c mounts if you cant get the compressor to slide in towards the motor to remove the belt.
There is alot of info on this subject...
good luck

Are there any other belts that need to be replaced besides the Tbelt and the Balancing Belt?
I also thought someone mentioned Rollers. Im not quite sure what they are. How much do they cost and how difficult is installation.
