I need a new engine
A couple days ago, I threw a rod though the block on my 87 944 Turbo. I am researching my options. Does anyone know a reputable shop that sells eninges/blocks, I am on a budget, and do not want this to cost as much as the car is worth...

I don't have a hard budget yet, I am just trying to feel out options - I am not interested in spending 7000 on an engine, and don't want to be cought buying a "bargain" engine that will blow in 2 months. Maybee a better question would be how much should I expect to spend on a reliable replacement?

Sorry to hear about your engine. It might be worth talking to Markus at http://www.blaszakprecision.com/ (in Kingston).

I would avoid 9Apart or Porschapart in Tottenham...that guy is a douche.
Randy at Whaletail (Waterloo) is somewhat better to deal with...but you have to be careful of BS...according to him a lot of his parts are `fully rebuilt`and `tested`when they may, in fact, be not rebuilt fully or properly tested. He`s focussed on 993 and newer cars now too, and his 944 inventory is really low. He does know his stuff though.
I`d PM a Pelicanite named plyhammer (Ohio area) for a good source for parts. Most Canadian parts guys want a big $ for their stuff.
Best of luck.

$1500 to $2000 should buy you a replacement engine with another $500 to ship it. I would figure on buying another $500 worth of parts to replace on the engine while you have it out and easy to get to.

I've been a bit frustrated by Randy at Whaletail, even on the small stuff he's sent. It's somehow never as good as he will lead you to believe on the phone and I'm not sure I would want that in an engine.
