Default Noisy diff;Backyard mechanic central NJ?

I have a whine in( diff?) 84 944 and I am hoping someone out there knows how to tame this beast and would be willing to tackle this daunting task for hire
The noise does not change with gears so it s behind or maybe in front of the trans

If the whine is the same coasting in neutral and varies only with speed I would suspect a wheel bearing.

Ouch. Could be the ring & pinion. These transmissions whine, but usually in lower gears and with me, it's most prominent when slowing in gear.

Mine does the same thing, i was told it was prob a torque tube bearing. I dont really want to get involved with that until my clutch goes bad. So either try and get used to it, like i have or turn the radio up.(My car doesnt have a radio)

Same exact thing happens with my 924S. As I let off the gas, in any gear, I can hear an annoying whine coming from the rear. Is that noise qualitative of an old and well used transmission?

Nope...they are all the 'reputable guys who know 944's and make a living working on them' types.
