Default 944 Turbo

I have been looking lately at these. I used to have a 924S which I loved but I had to sell it when I moved. Eventually I would like to pick up a 944 Turbo. Where are some good places to look? Is buying a car off ebay a bad idea? Give me some tips. 944 turbos are not too common in my neck of the woods.

I would search craigslist and ebay.

There are some good sites like "hankshelper.com" that will let you search all the craigslists within a certain distance from you. Be patient and the right car will pop up.

Check "clarks garage" first. I am told Turbos can be a bit tempermental and require a little more maintenance than the N/A's. That said, a hit or two off the boost pipe and its all forgotten

I'd check here, pelican, Craigslist and ebay, maybe local PCA chapter as well. Check out as many as you can to see how well some are maintained after 20+ years. Cheap to buy doesn't always make for cheap to own.

Did the 944 Turbos ever come with the rubber center clutch? I have found a 944 turbo that might be a good deal. Supposedly doesn't leak, timing belt and all that looks good replaced within the last 2 years. It doesn't have any records though. Also it has about half of its life left on the clutch. The guy said the car runs great. Its got a few dings but the paint and interior are in pretty good shape. Typical dash cracks and what not. Tranny was replaced last year with a used unit with only 60,000 miles on it. The car has 117,000 miles on it.

Yes. Turbe cars had a rubber center clutch stock.

If it goes it is a nice opportunity to upgrade!

Uh Oh.... either find one you can afford and save $$ for repairs, or buy the nicest example you can purchase and save money for repairs...

I have bought both my 944s off ebay sight unseen, and for the most part got exactly what I paid for (I got my N/A for $4200, and my 951 for $3200)...

Any car can be tempermental if not properly cared for, and often times the most expensive car to own is the cheapest to own...

Since when? IIRC the turbo cars NEVER came with the rubber centered clutch, or automatic transmission, but like everythign else I could be wrong.

I bought my 951 for $3200 with 196K on the odometer, I am in the car now for about 8K EXCLUDING the current effort... my current effort (effort is an understatement) WILL top 10K, and more likely end up over 15K when all is said and done. (profesionally rebuit motor, NEW exhaust, turbo, stand alone EMS, wastegate, intercooler, suspension wrap up (rear), and a partridge in a pear tree)! BUT the car will be worry free for YEARS to come... well worth the cost of admission in my oppinion, but NOT for everyone... for the 22K or so I will have spent, I will have one of the worlds BEST handling sports cars, with modern mechanicals, electronics, and superb comfort... WAY more than any other 22K car will EVER deliver....

To the 8K point, I got 22K in miles on it... not too bad for beating the **** out of a car for a year!

That car could still be available in a couple of months going on that I remember seeing it on craigslist at least 5 months ago as well. Not sure why he cannot get the money for it, the pictures make it look like a pretty nice car.

Just a little Craigslist (actually Google) tip I recently discovered. You can search all of Craigslist.org by entering your search like this into Google:

Porsche 944 turbo site:craigslist.org

Good luck with your search!

that's amazing and will be incredibly useful.

in response to the original post: you will never find a better deal on craigslist if you spot the opportunities and act quickly + you can negotiate and nail an even better deal!
