Does the man make the machine or does the machine make the man? BEST DRIVER
Who is the best driver, any year, any car, any driving championship?
My pics are Clark, Fangio, Schumacher.

It is a hard call seeing as there are no common points to judge them from, but I am going to say the Schmacher is the best IMHO, he has the ability to just turn it up to the next level at any moment, not to mention is win record.
But there are other drivers I would not want to leave out, Clark, Senna, Stewart from F1 (and I think in a few years I'll add Raikkonen to that list). McCray, Makinen, and Burns are also out of this world. And I have not even gotten into sports car racing..... Jeeze I could just go on and on. Every series has its starts and I would like to give them all justice but there are too many and I'm too tired....

I personally rate the rally (WRC) drivers very high. For example, Marcus Grönholm kicks ***!

If you take a look for WRC drivers there's one nation which is superior than the others, Finland.
The best rally drivers come from Finland. There's so many of them.If you look the statistics, the Flying Finns have won over 60% of all the rallies from the 60's till today.
We have also two F1 world champions; Keke Rosberg & Mika Häkkinen. The "new" finnish star Kimi Räikkönen is one of the most talented F1 drivers at the moment. If you compare the amount of the finnish top drivers to the amount of population in Finland (5.5 million) there's nodoubt about it, finnish drivers are the best in the world

Agree, but the rally drivers from Sweden are not far behind... ;-)

In F1, always liked Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, and Aryton Senna, and Keke Rosberg.
But WRC gets my vote for the best all around drivers. I like Gilles and Herve Pannizi (sp?). Of course the navigator (Herve) likely thinks he's the more important part!
Mike
P.S. Ollie...excuse me for my ignorance, but are there any cars built in Finland? If so, what? Thanks.

Schaumacher's got a great win record, but they weren't all earned...doesn't mean that he's not one of the best drivers in the world though.
I would think WRC drivers have the most overall talent just because of the obstacles they have to face, and the extreme dangers of some of the courses. When will you ever see an F1 driver saved by a tree on the side of a 200ft cliff?
