Post Brake upgrade -- Excellence

Does anyone know if the article in the current issue of Excellence on brake upgrade will work on 15 inch rims?(fuchs)Or is 16 inch the minimum size to fit the larger rotor and caliper? Can I just put on new caliper and leave the stock rotor?
Seems like this would be a great upgrade!

Do a search for the topic. I just answered a post yesterday about the same topic.

I saw your post,I did not see if 15 inch rims would work .or if you could just use the caliper with out getting new rotors.
Ill search and see if I missed that info.

Paul,
You will have to buy new rotors as the S4 calipers will not work on your stock NA rotors. Also, I am fairly certain you would need 16" wheels to accommodate the larger rotor and caliper (S4) for the front. Check out Tom P's website for all the info you could want about brake upgrades. www.944S2.com

Yes, these brakes require 16" wheels and certain 16" wheels at that. My cast design 90's hit the caliper when I mounted them after an S4 brake conversion so I either had to use 1/4" spacers or put my track wheels on (16 x 7 club sports) to clear the caliper. I am not sure if phone dials will work (haven't seen the article yet), but 15" def. will not. I'm surprised the article didnt address this if it was written for an NA conv.

BTW, S4's are the largest brake set-up you can have and maintain 16" wheels.

I did this exact conversion a few months back to my early offset car (see my p-car profile below for photos and details). You definetly have to go to at least 16", and even then you will need 1/4" spacers. I have 86 951 16" fuchs on there for auto-x and they still only have 1-2mm of clearance to the outer bleed valves even with the spacers. Now my 17" wheels fit with no problem.......

I did the S4 conversion on a 1986 951. 16x8 phone dials will fit, but 16x7 will not.

Yep, even 16" Fuchs need a spacer. You'll sheer the outer bleeder valve off if you don't use it. It's funny, the little rubber cover on my bleeder valve looks like it has ever so slightly rubbed the wheel at some point. So I guess this means that the Fuchs wheel must have a *slight* bit of deflection in it in extremely hard cornering. I'm not too worried, though.

IMHO, this is a great upgrade, even if you are only going to drive it on the street. The stopping power is incredible compared to stock. If anything, it may fill you with a little more confidence that you can stop in a hurry the next time some moron doesn't see your bright red Porsche coming down the road and pulls right in front of you....

Worth it? absolutely. I have the dreaded 70 MPH wobble with the 1/4" spacer trick, but I love the stopping capabilities over stock. I am also refinishing a set of 7" club sports for daily use that will solve that problem, that and proper balancing.

Think of it as that G-force-push-you-back-in-your-seat feeling/dynamic of increased torque, only in reverse. Equally as impressive and grin-inducing.

I would not say it is for everybody though, because in the grocery store parking lot, it's hard to just slow down, they STOP you real quick at low speeds.
