Question Manuals: Pros and Cons

I am curious about the opinions on Haynes VS Factory 944 manuals. I have a factory set and my college-F.S.U!- didn't prepare me for the user "unfriendly" factory set! I have heard some grumbling about Haynes as well. What is your preference and why?....Currently seeking "Porsche's for Dummies" Thx! D

They both have positives and negatives. The best I've found is to prepare with both and try to find someone who has done the repair and ask.

Of course at U of F they did teach us to read.

The factory manuals are a) intended for techs who are somewhat familiar with both the car & the user-unfriendliness of factory manuals, and b) translated from German. This in no way excuses the poor quality of some of it, or some of the big gaps in coverage. In farness, you're assumed to have the 924 manual set as a foundation for the 944 set.

The Haynes manual flat-out sucks... but it's cheap & a good place to start; what they do cover is pretty well written, and (at leas for the earlier cars) fairly accurate. It's a good companion / starting point for the factory manuals, and a fairly good point of enry for the amateur DIY'er.

There's also an excellent book on Bosch fuel injection & engine management (publhed by Bently, IIRC). My copy's at work, but I'll try to remember to post the proper title this evening when I go in. It's great for even the beginner. The hardest part is deciding which info applies to your car, since it covers almost all Bosch systems from the earliest (not difficult if you read the application chart). It may require multiple readings to understand fully if you're lacking some technical background.

Jim, is that spelled 'Bosch' or 'Botch'????

Haynes manual should cover all 8 valve models, including Turbo.
It does not cover late model 944 even less Turbo.
Haynes 944 manual is total grab !
I prefer factory manuals.

There is no one answer. I have found that the best solution is a combination of the Haynes manual, the factory manuals (on CD ) and Rennlist posts.

Thumbs up

I have both the factory and just picked up a new Haynes for 12.95. I figured the more text I have the better! Plan was to use both and fill in the blanks from there. Wasn't sure about the Bosch, it appeared area specific. I will try that one as well! Not certain on the 924 manual, all I found on the 924 was for 82 and earlier models. Is there a 924S manual as well?....Thanks for your time and info!!! D

The Bosch manual I referred to in my earlier post is titled "Bosch Fuel Injection and Engine Management," by Charles O. Probst, published by Robert Bently, ISBN 0-8376-0300-5.

For anybody having trouble understanding or troubleshooting your injection & engine electronics, this is a _very_ handy book.

the factory manual, as has already been said, is written for porsche dealer techs. i found it to be of only moderate help on many repairs, especially as i am a fairly inexperienced do it yourselfer, not a trained mechanic. the haynes manual is not the best on later cars, but it definitely is a help if you're looking for a refernece on "easier" repairs, ones that the factory manual assumes any idiot knows how to do.

if you're looking for "porsche for dummies" post a lot of questions on rennlist everyone's willing to help out, even if you ask a million "stupid" questions (i should know, i've asked plenty).

I own the Bosch Fuel Injection book jim968 was referring to, and it really is a great book. It contains a lot of good information.
