Default Realistic Turbo HP gains?

So i'm getting back into the 944 arena after totaling my 944S, I'm looking at Turbo's, and I ran across this on ebay.....I've seen and searched and read about 300+hp turbos on the forum but are these kind of numbers achievable with rebuilding with "upgraded" internals and a bigger turbo? Im in school and have a beater to get around in, so im looking for something that I can do a complete rebuild on myself. Just wondering what realistic hp increases are seen for average DD 951's

Getting 300 at the rear wheels at 15lb PSI (safe boost) is possible with a bigger turbo/exhaust/MAF/injectors. Usually about 4 to 5k in upgrades.

Going beyond that takes really big $$ ($30,000 easily) or crazy good skills with cheap access to shop/tools. Even with that and increasing displacement getting more than 450 at the rear wheels that you can whale on around the track reliably is about the max. These transmissions start to fail around the 400hp rwhp from what I have read.

I don't know how much power I'm putting down, but I have run the mods in my sig for over 50K miles, 30K ish at 15psi and the last 20K miles at 16/17 psi on 93 octane. Stock internals, light rebuild, even stock head gasket with an o-ringed head (knock on wood ) I also drive my car quite aggressively, it sees 6400 rpm in uhm, not 1st or 2nd, daily.

For a stock turbo expect to see about 270whp as the cap on a 26/6 (standard Turbo) and just under 300whp on a 26/8 (Turbo S) @ 15psi. This is assuming you have the basic supporting mods which are chips, boost controller, fuel support (3-bar regulator), and no cat.

15psi is the threshold of reliability i think on these cars. When you start going past it, everything better be up to par or you will start seeing problems pop up.

If you want more power, a better turbo is a must. And with that said, i think once you go past 350whp you really start sacrificing reliability and will really be spending alot more money.

I think a realistic cap between reliability, spool up and cost is shooting for 300-320whp @ 15psi. That can pretty easily be done with the tried and true 27/6 or going with some newer tech turbos.

+1 with what's been said above. 300hp is a good hp number to shoot for in terms of reliable power out of a 951.

Add to the upgrades the following:
- Bigger oil cooler
- Better head gasket (I think there's one called "Firewire" or something like that)
- Run with at least 951S brakes (aka 928 "big blacks")
- make sure all seals and o-rings are newer.

I have a 4" exhaust (no cat.), Dual port adjustable wastegate w/ manual boost controller, I run 22 lbs. of boost daily, Mass air flow conversion with a piggyback controller, wideband oxygen sensor setup, adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I dyno at 291.6 RWHP. I am a technician(unfortunately on 'vettes) so I do all my own work. BIG money saver.

Thanks for the advice guys.....I plan on doing my own work. I know the basic functioning of a turbo system, i've just never worked with any of the plumbing that goes with them. I've always worked on NA vehicles.

Preventative bearing replacements. If the PO had done that to my car he would still have it.
