Hi, Bryan.

I'll simply state the obvious: drive a bunch of examples of each and buy the one you like.

I see you're from Federal Way--we're almost neighbors. There's a fairly active group of 928 owners in the area, and at least a couple 944/928 and 951/928 owners in the mix. Almost bought a 944 myself, for a track toy this year. We have an active email list if you'd like to jump in and ask some questions. Stop by www.PacNW928.com to find the email list if you're interested.

Some of will likely be at autocross on 3/23 (Bremerton Raceway) and DE 3/30 (Pacific Raceway--ex-SIR) in some form of front engine car. Stop on out and say "hi."

Thumbs up

I have an 88 S4 automatic, and I put the Jager Engineering shifter in which makes it tiptronic like. www.jageng.com, once you get used to it, you'll be able to hotfoot around in the twisties and not wrong gear yourself going into or coming out of turns.

As for the differences between a 944 Turbo and 928 as everyone has said before me it all comes down to personal preference. Street racing, track racing, 1/4 mile racing, where do you want to shine? There are enough tuners in both the 928 world and 944 world to make either car a beast if you've got the money. Either car will be able to handle 98% of whatever it meets on the street if that's your thing and that's to say nothing of driver skill.

I can vouch for 928 reliability however as my car has 118,000 trouble free miles and I've crossed the U.S. with it three times so far. I briefly owned a 500E that I had to flatbed three times in it's 8 months with me.

Well...seems to me that I got in at the end of the fray, so to speak.

For the record, I have owned an 88 924S and my current 87 928S4. Take notice of what I own now.

The 924S and the 928S4 are completely differemt animals. I chose to keep the 928 simply for 2 reasons....

1) Commfort. This car rides nbetter IMHO than the 924S did, and rides significantly better than any Vette I've ever been in. In the area of comfort I would add that handling as a side bar. The 928 'hugs' corners much better and has a more solid feeling - with no bone jarring on the bumps in the road. The interior amenities are generous (albeit there are occansional problems that may pop up, all in all - they are easy fixes and one timers at that).

2) Power. Nothing beats the feeling of a hard take off, again IMHO, of the 928S4 models. Add to that the reasonance flap actuation and wooohooo!

Now for maintenance comments...

I've owned my 928 for just over a year now. When I got it, the previous owner had no mechanical inclination...lucky for my car (and my check book!) - I do. I have done all of the maintenace on my car - and have nearly completed a full restoration on it. Some of the items include the Timing Belt/Water pump replacement as well as the torque tube replacement (now THAT was fun).

Parts costs are probably similiar in that many of the 928 parts are also used in 944 and 968's (really - same part numbers).

Electrics can be a confusing area in any car. Granted, the 928 has literally miles of wiring - but they are color coded - and with the use of a Multi meter, most problems can be found easily.

All in all, consider this...

In 1987, the World Speed record for a stock production car was set in Bonnevile by Al Holbert in a 928 S4 - 171 mph! This car does 0-60 in 5.7 secs and just begins to really 'breath' in the 60-80 range. When you are traveling at 120 mph and 'step on it' - the car moves! Now to me that is impressive (and no waiting for the boost to kick in).

I've personally had my car up to 165 mph - with throttle left - and in complete comfort with absolutely no handling issues.

Oh yeah....one more thing - I routinely get ~18 mpg regardless of the way I drive it (on long road trips - 21 mpg).

Test drive a 87+ today with an open mind. Then you may see (or feel) why Porsche called it the 'Flagship' of the fleet.

THere is nothing out there better for power than more displacement. SO, the question is which car do you want to dump 10 grand into? most of us dump that much into it? I say the 928. Or are you looking for a car to put nothing into?

Oops....I for got something.

Believe it or not, longevity is also a key issue.

I personally know of a 928 with over 300K miles on it and the original motor. The chap races it too.

I've also heard of another chap that has reportedly gotten over 400K on his original motor, and it's still just keeps going and going and going.
