I run distilled water and never have had an issue.

What would be I lubricating anyway?

John, I hope you won't lay back, your advice always comes from a perspective of experience with many miles on 944's. Much more valuable than mere opinions.

Strictly speaking, the only thing it can lubricate is the sealing surfaces of the WP shaft seals. If water ever got to the actual WP bearings, the pump would be toast. Nowadays the seals are made of self-lubricating plastics (TFE-based) so I don't know how crucial having a lubricant in the water is. The 944 WP's I have torn apart used these type of seal surfaces.

Yes, and if you want your sealing surfaces to continue to seal a little lubrication is a nice thing. Remember that the coolant (or just plain water) is under pressure and will get to the start of the sealing surface. As that corrodes and wears the water will get a little further in, slowly but surely it will get past the seal as the sealing surface wears. No lubrication makes the wear happen faster.
