I can agree with most of the Sony comments. My Vaio has been great, expect for not being able to run directx properly (incompatible with the video card). but then it is 3 years old.......

I can reccomend a Sony to anyone.

As for Compaq, I had warranty issues when i was overseas, and Compaq were doing their best not to help. uselss backup, and the product was quite fragile.

Ditto on the Compaq Armada. My Armada M700 PIII 750 has been bullet-proof for the past 3 yrs. Lots of travel with it, and not a problem. Not the fastest one out there, but plenty fine for most everything except gaming. If you want to go cheap, they can be had in almost-new condition for well under $500 on ebay (but that method of buying is a whole other debate).

I'm considering buying a second one for the wife/kids to beat up in the kitchen where there is no room for the desktop machine.

I have to agree with the comment about IBM being the Mercedes of notebooks. If you have the gelt, buy the IBM. If not I still stand by Compaq.

Of course, if you were inclined to look at Apple...

Cool

I recommend Dell also. I have the 8200 purchased as a refurbished item. MUCH lower price with support and everything. It has a 1.7Ghz, 256M, 30G, at $1300.

Works great.

Ask John D.!

He goes through notebook computers as often as I change my socks. If anyone knows a notebook abuse threshold, it would be John D.

I hear all you anti-Compaq guys, but I've had my Compaq Presario Laptop (middle of the road Compaq) for one year now and very much enjoy it.

Doing a little homework while watching the Porsche AG screensaver:
