Well my car got hit and my insurance est the damage is around 2200. However that is not including the suspension damage which needs to be looked at on a lift. Now the other insurance has yet to have their adjuster look at the car. I don't think the car is worth fixing. The accident was not my fault and was wondering if I can ask for just a check or does the money HAVE to go to repairs if the car isn't totaled? The other insurance is farmers. How do I go about tactfully asking for just the check?
Note: damage is to the front bumper, both front fenders, left head light, hood, and right front suspension.
Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the wreck, hope you are ok, you do not have to fix the car, but what they do now is say "it will cost $XXXXX to fix this car here is a check" "but wait the suspension is messed up too", "ok when it gets to the body shop have them call us and we will come take another look" and the dance goes on
good luck

Thanks for the reply. Yes I'm ok however i do not like keeping cars that have been hit. i'm just glad the girl didn't try to drive off. The insurance is paying for my rental and going to pay to tow the car. They might as well total the car as their going to be paying out a lot from what I can tell.

Where do you live, sometimes insurance companies handle things differently depending on state. Depending on where you live, I may be interested in the car as I am looking for a rebuildable project for reasonable.

Been there, done that - several times. I agree, I don't want a car that has had more than minor sheet metal damage, if it's a special car. I wouldn't expect too much hassle from Farmers, they are a heads-up outfit for the most part. You should expect a check that reflects the cost of repairs, the cost of rental, plus the tow, plus any medical, minus some residual scrap value, but not more than Blue Book. If they lowball you, start saying you are going to get a lawyer to deal with them, and you're thinking of waiting a while to make sure no medical issues (the word "whiplash" helps) arise. I had the other person's insurance offer go from $2500 to 3500 simply by suggesting I wanted to consult an attorney. But don't expect to "make" money on the claim.

the gal who hit my 951S was insured by bristol west a subsidairy of farmers. they were horrible to deal with.
take the car to a body shop and have the shop owner point out the stuff on the car that is bad. let the pros haggle it out. then go over the estimate with the owner to see if it is reasonable. if yes, and you dont want the work done pay the shop onwer for his time.
if it isnt reasonable, let the games begin. threatening to call a lawyer doesnt mean much. money talks, bullshyt walks. i took them to small claims court, and it wasnt until after the judge decided the case that they woke up!

Hope you are okay, just be glad it's not Progressive! They are the worst insurance company to deal with.. EVER! IMO. Their adjusters are just out to screw people, not make repairs right. After my last dealings with them after being rear-ended I canceled all existing non-auto policies I had in spite.

Well the insurance did total the car and they are cutting me a check. They were on the fence about giving me money for repairs or total the car without looking at the suspension. I told them I wasn't going to fix the car and they ended up totaling the car. They are cutting me a full check and will be picking up the car.
